AAA Membership

Non-auto benefits

If you do a fair bit of traveling and stay in hotels, the AAA membership can be very valuable. I saved an average of $15/night this past year, which more than paid for the membership.

FYI. AAA will NOT offer tow service if you are more than 20' from a paved surface. I found that one out the hard way.

Interesting. Several years ago we were camping in the Allegheny National Forest in PA. We were over 100 feet from the nearest fire/logging road and our minivan would not start (tuned out that something chewed through some wires under the vehicle). It was a Saturday and we called AAA. Thankfully a local tower knew the area and came out to get our van. He came out in a flatbed and towed it to the nearest town. We had to spend another two days without our vehicle but it was repaired and the same tower brought it back to us the following Monday afternoon.

Perhaps a recent change in service?

I think it mostly depends on the driver and how cool he is. They can do it if they want to, they probably just don't have to.

I suspect there is some variation from one AAA club to another. Back in the day in some areas, AAA membership was for the car - and not just the driver. In other clubs/regions, the AAA membership worked for the member, regardless of what car he or she was driving. There was also a different mileage limit for "free" towing (3, 5, 10 miles, etc.) or emergency road service.

Here in VA, the membership benefits go to the member - even if he or she is driving someone else's car. In other words, it pays to have an AAA member with you if you break down or lock your keys in the vehicle.
:guitar2:

AAA has a "Plus" membership available, but it costs a lot more. It provides for two wreckers (if necessary) and they'll tow you up to 100 miles. That serves as peace of mind, I suppose, if you travel a lot and worry about breaking down far from home.

I used AAA Plus about twenty years ago and was towed fifty miles when a belt pulley on my 1981 Plymouth went south. Since then, I used AAA (downgraded to a regular membership since the mid-1990s) one time to have a pickup truck towed ten miles for a broken fuel pump.

Aside from that, you can get discount movie tickets, reduced hotel prices and AAA has an oustanding travel agency (which doesn't require club membership) for both private parties and corporate entities.
:whip2:

I still maintain my AAA membership because both my vehicles are out of warranty, but am considering canceling it. My insurance company has a rather decent "towing/breakdown" service that costs a lot less - but it doesn't cover me if I am in another car. I have seen AAA dues climb steadily over the several years and I haven't ever used it. Oh well, I am paid up through October - so it stays for now. In the rare event I travel, the hotel discounts are not too shabby.

Mike, as I have said before. Things have changed. My brother has a tow truck/repair facility and contracting with AAA. If he is as much as 1 min late it is a huge problems for him. So, he gets to 99% of his call within 1 hour. 1 hour is their guideline. Their constructors have a limited territory which helps assure that they always have a tow truck within an hour. Unless you are out in the boonies.

Your brother must be exception to the rule. I have seen people wait on their service for over 2 hours, not in boonies either.

:iagree: waited two hours for the tow truck to arrive with my cousin when someone stole his rims.

Waaaay back in the late 80's I dropped my AAA. $ was tight, so I didn't renew.
I was cleaning up forclosed property to prepare to sell. Driving all over the state of Florida.
I was 1/2 way from Tampa to Orlando. Water pump went out on my truck. Was over $100 for the tow back to Orlando.

I have had AAA+ ever since.

Had my Jeep towed back to Orlando from the Ocala Natnl. Forest when my engine jumped time.

That tow more than paid for my year of AAA+.

Of course now that I drive Toyotas, I don't get towed near as often.

But, as I do have 6 vehicles, ranging in age from '67 as the oldest, and '97 as the newest, and not all Toyota, I will keep my AAA+ just for peace of mind.

Theoretically, you should never need their service because you are driving a Toyota :D. I am a member and I recommend it. The one time I got stuck, I was very happy I had AAA. Also, their trip books/maps are great.
