Aaa
I suspect there is some variation from one AAA club to another. Back in the day in some areas, AAA membership was for the car - and not just the driver. In other clubs/regions, the AAA membership worked for the member, regardless of what car he or she was driving. There was also a different mileage limit for "free" towing (3, 5, 10 miles, etc.) or emergency road service.
Here in VA, the membership benefits go to the member - even if he or she is driving someone else's car. In other words, it pays to have an AAA member with you if you break down or lock your keys in the vehicle.

AAA has a "Plus" membership available, but it costs a lot more. It provides for two wreckers (if necessary) and they'll tow you up to 100 miles. That serves as peace of mind, I suppose, if you travel a lot and worry about breaking down far from home.
I used AAA Plus about twenty years ago and was towed fifty miles when a belt pulley on my 1981 Plymouth went south. Since then, I used AAA (downgraded to a regular membership since the mid-1990s) one time to have a pickup truck towed ten miles for a broken fuel pump.
Aside from that, you can get discount movie tickets, reduced hotel prices and AAA has an oustanding travel agency (which doesn't require club membership) for both private parties and corporate entities.

I still maintain my AAA membership because both my vehicles are out of warranty, but am considering canceling it. My insurance company has a rather decent "towing/breakdown" service that costs a lot less - but it doesn't cover me if I am in another car. I have seen AAA dues climb steadily over the several years and I haven't ever used it. Oh well, I am paid up through October - so it stays for now. In the rare event I travel, the hotel discounts are not too shabby.
