About to purchase Toytec Ultimate 3" Lift, For or Against?

Hi all. So I'm about to pump some money into my 07 Sport and want to make sure I'm doing this right.

I wanted to go with the Icons, but the price is just too much for me to justify right now. I don't plan to wheel the rig very hard, but it will go off road, so I think the Toytecs should do the job just fine.

I plan to put on a shrockworks front bumper with winch and a tiregate carrier in the back and want to make sure these can handle the weight.

Should I get the 5100 Bilstein in the back or the 5160 with remote res? Will be adding the LR UCAs as well. Should I add the body lift for the hell of it as well?

Any advice, experiences you would like to share with me would be much appreciated! Thanks

Just expect and be ok with an increased incidence of ripping CV boots. Due to their horrid service record, Toyota moved away from AUTO hubs. They were always failing. Instead, the 4runner's hubs are locked to the half shaft. This saves on wear and tear and the failure of an auto hub.

On older 4runners that did have auto locking hubs, you could do a manual hub conversion. I did it on my 91 4runner.

Anyway. Sorry for tangent. What this means in practical terms is your front drive shafts to each wheel are always spinning, whether in 4wd or not. This means that the cv boot is always turning, and stressing. When you lift your 4runner, you will be increasing the angle on the boot and this usually causes them to fail quicker, and more often.

Just be aware and look out for it every now and then. Once a boot rips, the joint grease will come out, water and dirt will get in and this will cause the CV joint to fail eventually.

What DC Runner mentioned is not specific to Toytec, it will happen with any 3" lift. There is a shop in Denver that sells axels made for lifts. They run about $139 each.

We have Toytec Ultimate lift on our FJ and no issues at all with them.

Let me tell you a little story about Toytec the company.

A week or so ago a local FJ owner had his FJ stolen from his garage. He posted itup on the FJ forum to have people watch out for it. Another FJ owner went out (there were probly more than one out) looking for the stolen FJ. He ended up right behind the stolen FJ and called the police. The theives noticed him following them and they ditched the FJ, leaving their drugs in it.

Well it just happened that the guy that followed the stolen FJ had been in a wreck that morning and he happened to mention it on the FJ Forum.

Toytec read the post and his helping him get a new ARB front bumper. They had no obligation to do anything. Toytec supports offroading and the owners of offroad vehicles. They wanted to do something for him to show appreciation for what he did.

Toytec (as well as ICON and others) are a big supporter of the FJ Summit and other events. They have a annual customer appreciation event every year.

I suggest that before you place your order, that you call toytec, explain your plans and any concerns you have and see what they have to say. They are much more than a web site.

LRUCA are a inexpensive solution but there are much better products out there. We went with LRUCA on our FJ because I did not have a big budget at the time. If I could have picked any of them I would have gone with a unibal set up. I have Total Chaos on my 4Runner. But it came with those.

I got ToyTec coilovers, ran them for about a thousand miles and they were REALLY stiff. felt like i could feel every single bump on the road (i drive 75-80% of street). it was so much stiffer than stock

finally got sick of them and bought icons and they were a world of difference. felt like i was back to stock but 3 inches higher.

i would recommend getting something a bit more expensive, getting a better brand and being satisfied with it and not having to reupgrade again like i did to myself

toytec coilovers are just a hybrid coilover built off of a bilstein 5100 shock so they dont get the top quality performance of a fully built, more traditional coilover.

also, you have to consider that if the toytec coilovers are blown, they cannot be rebuilt so you HAVE to buy brand new ones. the more traditional ones from fox or icon or the other major brands are able to be rebuilt for a fraction of the price.

There is nothing wrong with the Toytec coilover setups; they are very popular. But as previously stated they are built around off the shelf standard Bilstein 5100 shocks. I would suggest trying to find someone local to take a ride to see if you like the feel.

Personally I run custom valved Fox's. They are actually at Fox getting rebuilt right now. Going with a higher end setup like Fox, Icon or King allows the best of both worlds. You get great on pavement comfort and the best off road control. Yes it is a little more $ up front, but if you plan on keeping the truck for a while it will be worth it.

I ran OME, Bilstein and then went to Fox. I should have just bought Fox's originally like I wanted. But I was looking to save $$, didn't really work out.

Wait for MetalTech's Cyber Monday sale on Icons! You won't be sorry at all. My wife and six month old sale that it rides way better than stock, and I have a huge lift.

while i dont have Fox/Icon coilovers i will say that there is a HUGE difference from lift springs/shocks to coilovers. It is WORTH the money especially because they can be rebuilt.

I run Toytec Ultimate with extensions on rear sway bar to bring the bar flat and give full travel and 32.1" Toyo Open Country A/T II tires.

These are stiffer on small bumps only (than stock).
Medium bumps are absorbed much better than stock.
Large bumps to big boulders during 4-wheeling are an awesome improvement over stock.
Cornering on the highway is much improved with the truck staying much flatter.
The ride is very well balanced front to back, solid, confidence inspiring.
