ABS kicks on sharp turns

I need to try this too.
Never have.
This sound right?

To clarify...SST=paper clip

---To clear---
1. Ignition on
2. SST on and off DLC3 plug #4 and #12, 4+ times within 8 seconds.
Check for normal dash lights.
3. Remove SST


---ZPC---
1. Ignition off.
2. Connect SST to #4 and #12.
Steering wheel straight and in Park. Flat and level.
3. Turn on ignition
VSC/TRAC lights on when obtaining ZPC.


Then what? Ignition off or pull the SST first?

P.S.
Can put in that 'fun' switch too if you want to kill the VSC/TRAC.
 
someone please school on me on this zpc thing. this must be done by the dealer with special computer? how much does this generally cost? this is my first time hearing about this.

literally all it takes is a paper clip and reading the simple instructions posted. takes all of 5 minutes or less

Update: Ended up taking it to Dealership for a Zero Point Calibration. Traction is still acting up. This is after both trying it myself with paperclip AND going to Dealership for ZPC (was $137). Guess it's just something I'll live with?

I finally got around to this and noticed my DLC3 (under dash plug) had no pin in the #12 slot.
Some more reading around here lead me to try pin #14 for 2003-2004 models.
Seemed to work just need to test it in the dirt.

Info from above...

Parked flat and level, steering wheel straight.

1. Ensure the shift lever is in Park.

2. Turn the ignition switch ON.

3. Using SST 09843–18040 (paper clip), repeat a cycle of short and open between terminals Ts and CG of DLC3 4 times or more within 8 seconds.
Verify that the VSC indicator light is lit indicating the recorded zero point is erased.

4. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

5. Be sure the terminals Ts and CG of DLC3 are disconnected.

6. Turn the ignition switch ON.

7. Check that the VSC warning light goes off about 15 seconds after the ignition switch is turned ON.

8. After ensuring that the VSC warning light remains OFF for 2 seconds, turn the ignition switch OFF.

9. Connect the terminal Ts and CG of DLC3 using SST 09843–18040.

10. Turn the ignition switch ON.

11. After turning the ignition switch ON, check that the VSC warning light is lit for about 4 seconds and then starts quick blinking at 0.13 second intervals.

12. After ensuring the blinking of the VSC warning light for 2 seconds, turn the ignition switch OFF.

13. Remove the SST from terminals Ts and CG of DLC3.

Drive the vehicle to confirm there are no re–occurring lights or DTCs.

Have you done a ZPC (Zero Point Calibration) since you installed your lift? That's probably the culprit, when you raise the vehicle the yaw rate & g-force sensors need to recalibrated, it helps mitigate much of that premature VSC/TRAC kicking in.



this is nice to know! hate when this kicks on when I'm in the desert or wheeling.

A ZPC is not going to keep your VSC from kicking on when driving out in loose dirt/gravel or wheeling.

A ZPC will NOT completely eliminate the possibility of VSC kicking on when taking a sharp turn quickly in a lifted truck.

The VSC/ABS system in these trucks is surprisingly sensitive, and it will kick in if it reads significant enough variance in rotational velocity from one wheel to another. Larger tires with more sidewall flex, lifted suspension that moves and shifts more under certain loads and during directional changes (i.e. sharp turns over uneven pavement, at high enough speed) WILL result in a short term variance of rotational velocity between your wheels. More-so than what existed in the stock/OEM vehicle configuration. ABS system interprets that variance as wheel slip, and applies VSC correction to fix it.

2 Ways around it.

-Disable VSC.

-Pay attention to the conditions when VSC kicks in, and modify your driving style to avoid them. Maybe don't take certain turns as sharply or quickly.

To everyone who visits this thread -pay attention. The above quote is the most accurate and logical explanation I've heard. I've tried all of the procedures from paying a dealership to attempting on my own, and my 4Runner STILL slips. If I were a moderator I'd consider this thread closed

Hi EdmundGTP I was told that droping the sway bar can reduce the possibility of VSC kicking in. I've a 2012 T4R LTD. What do you think about that?

Dropping as in removing? Hard to tell without trying it out, I'd say. If I had to guess, removing the sway bar would likely allow even more of a rotational discrepancy between wheels, possibly making it worse. But then again, sometimes real life doesn't match our expectations. Give it a shot and let us know!
