ABS On/Off Switch?

A switch would be great.

Some of the planes I use just shut it off below about 10mph. After all, how much control can you lose below ten mph vs how much stuff can you hit by NOT being able to lock up all 4? At the very least some minimum speed would be helpful. DAC on the later T4R's would handle those few scenarios when you want ABS to help with low-speed downhill.

Wouldn't this be against federal regulations?

Some cars are made without ABS at all, even in 2010 so I doubt there are any Federal regulations against not having it, but you never know if disabling it is another issue. If they did make that law it's really stupid since my shitty early 3rd gen 2-wheel ABS has almost cost me my life. Mine was a very, very serious danger off road!

Hey how did you turn your abs off? I have almost totaled my 4runner in wrightwood because of abs.

did you remove the fuse and then pull the light out from the dash or is there a better way?

I just pulled the fuse in the main box under the hood and the light just stays on all the time in the dash. You probably could pull the light out of the dash too, but I figured it was more trouble than it's worth so I just let it stay on.

The ABS fuse won't just pop out from the top. You have to unbolt the fuse block from the truck and then unscrew the ABS fuse from underneath the fuse box, and then you can pull it out from the top. It only took about 10 or 15 minutes.

Thanks Im going to do that right now. And thats for the motivation to fix my arb with a body lift a few months ago

Cool you'll like it w/o ABS so much better! So you drilled new holes in the bumper like me? I think that's way better than cutting and rewelding the mounts, huh?

I know this thread is old, but I myself would never dream of disabling it. It is a valuable safety feature. Besides, if you've ever locked up the brakes going 60 MPH and ruined a set of rear tires, it sucks. I like the ability to stop quicker and straighter, on all road surfaces. I can think of one offroad trail, Red Cone in Colorado, where if you disabled it you would literally be taking your life into your own hands. It is a VERY steep descent on lose dirt. I'm told at least one person per year locks up the brakes, his rear end passes him, and he plummets 4000 feet end over end to his death. As a former automotive and aircraft mechanic, I'm here to tell you it's a good system that works.

I guess to each their own.. I couldn't stop worth a crap on steep stuff off road with my ABS. It would just pulse and the truck would keep going. I could never actually bring it to a clean stop on dirt until I was on a relatively flatter surface. Even though my brakes still suck (I still need to do the Tundras), now I can at least bring it to a stop and be able to descend steep faces under control. I can think of a few trails like Bullfrog, and Dishpan Springs that I would never do with ABS turned on.

Your '99 brakes are a little different than my '97s so that may be why your ABS doesn't bother you.
