Absalom's Cookie Cutter 4runner Builds - New and Updated!

Why do you recommend no wheel spacers for 285/75/16 tires on the Budget Trail Crawler, but for all other builds using that tire you do recommend wheel spacers? Is it to keep costs below a certain level, or is it because those users are unlikely to have rubbing issues with their expected usage?

Thanks for putting this out there.

Where's the "Smoke everyone off the line build" with a supercharger & fuel mods? I'm disappointed... I'll just have to write that one myself :)

Would you add the trans cooler to any of the builds? You replaced the radiator, might as well do the cooler too.

Does the trucks millage really matter with these?

I know most of the people here know this, but some might not. The radiator doesn't need to be replaced if you have a 5-speed (also no trans cooler). ;)

Thanks so much for the feedback guys. I had an absolute blast creating these builds. This community has helped me a bunch so it feels really good to be able to give back. I welcome all suggestions. As some have mentioned, there's a million different ways to skin a cat, I just thought if I could provide a basis on which to begin a build, new members would be able to catch up easier.

nice thread. Thanks for compiling these.

I am finishing up installing an SS 1.2 on my 98. I saw this as valuable to get an idea of what other upgrades I can combine with it.

:hatsoff:

good info that you pit together here. one thing though ... you don't want to combine 285s, plus a 1.5" wheel spacer because it will hit on the wheel wells at full compression.

It happened to me in 2014 and Derpiful just being both fenders because he has 285s and 1.5" spacers. The wheel looks like it fits but at full compress it will cause body damage.

New OEM Shocks/Struts

This is awesome absalom ... Thank you .. I'm that noob with all the questions .. Although I have't started a thread for it, I have PM'd a couple guys who have been amazing in their help/guidance.

My one question is about the OEM Shock/Struts on your Trail Bias list. Would Bilstein 4600 or 5100 offer me more support? I carry a lot of gear and possibly will be towing as well. Also looking into adding a storage system/sleeping platform.

Thanks again to all on the site!

Adam

E rated are kinda known for their harsh ride because they are meant to handle a lot of weight and our 3rd gens don't weigh much. I'm really happy with my C rated BFG M/T's. I think they ride just perfect at 39 PSI.

why do you suggest wheel spacers when one could get wheels with proper backspacing and be safer and have 24 less bolts to worry about?

With all due respect, I imagine that is because wheel spacers are probably a lot more affordable for some people that are trying to ball on a budget.

I have wheel spacers, wish I had better wheels to fit the setup I have, but I'm fine with rocking those for the time being. I've even got some of those on a car that I race from time to time. Sometimes they're a necessary evil:).

Absalom--I have a 1999, SR-5 (278800 miles) and have added an ARB front bumper. I think your Dailey Driver/Pavement Bias is what I need. I need your opinion on the following questions:
1--How do I compensate for the weight of the ARB bumper?
2--Do I need to buy new 99 talls?
3--Is the upgrade to Tundra brakes worth the cost?--not your opic, I know, but I appreciate your opinion.

I tried to ask these questions in a post (Daily Drive Suspension and got referred to your post and then to OME parts--I can only afford to do this one time. Thank you your help.

you could get the tundra bilstein shocks and use them to boost up the front, plus you gain a bit more travel.

Absalom, is there any chance you could be convinced to add a section about bump-stops when doing a lift? I know that is opening up a whole new can o'worms :) Maybe its own new thread?

Why do we avoid E rated tires?
Our trucks don't weigh near enough to justify the extra load carrying capacity that these tires offer. What we end up with is, a stiff ride, with heavy tires. E rated tires are more expensive, less compliant, less comfortable than D or C rated tires. They do hold an incredible amount of weight though, it's pretty astonishing how capable they are in the right application.

Its too bad that most of the A/T and M/T tires that are offered to me are E-rated. How much of a noticeable difference is it from C or D load?
