Ac compressor noise

When ever I turn on the ac the compressor make a noise like a knocking noise it goes away and they comes when ever using the ac. Also I hear a clicking noise by the glove box when the compressor kicks in. Any ideas. 99 4runner

Do your basic checks on compressor ,pulley ,clutch tensioner pulley and brackets. I just replaced mine after it locked up,made a screech then a clunk and it siezed. Clicking in dash may be relay ,replacing comp is not a fun job

What kind of checks if you mind me askin? Sorry I'm a noob for this.

look for oil leaking around compressor or signs of clutch going out dust and what not, pulleys out of alignment . open hood crank it up with ac button off and listen for noise then have some one engage ac while you watch clutch engage

My mechanic check it out he said that it could be the pulley or clutch out of alignment, but after checking it he says that the clutch needs to be replaced.

Not as bad as it could have been,couple hours and you can have it swapped out

We'll I took it to the dealer today to get an alignment. I told the service consultant about the noise, he's a honest consultant know him for a while. He says he'll have his tech checking the noise out. I get a call he tells me that the clutch and the compressor are in perfect shape and the noise is coming from the crank He explains that that it can be the bushings only and he hopes that's it, but he has to removed some parts and make sure that is not the crank that is bad. Labor is 160 and the bushing kit 40. I'm hoping is only the bushings and not the whole crank. I'll find out tomorrow.
