ACTUAL fuel Capacity

I know that the written fuel capacity of my 3.4 SR5 is 18.5gal, but is that untill the pump automatically shuts off, or untill the fuel starts coming up the neck? if not, what is the actual fuel capacity up untill the pump automatically shuts off? I have an ultragauge, and I want it to be as accurate as possible. plus i've always wondered.

tank holds 18 gallons, but the fuel pump can only reach about 17 of them. So if you ever run out of gas, just know you have a gallon still, you just cant use it haha.

I can attest to that. I always overfilled on long trips and just last week started throwing p0446... Boo overfilling.

Did NOT know that, awesome to know! Explains why it happened to my dad twice, he insists on filling it till it overflows EVERY time.

I've wondered this too. My gas light comes on in my 99 around 240 miles to a tank, and then it only takes around 14 gallons until the pump shuts off. Wondering how accurate my gauge is now that you guys say it has 17 useable gallons.

I set my Ultragauge to 17 gallons. I read about the last gallon not being useable, so I just took it out of the equation. After 4 fill ups, the Ultragauge has been pretty accurate on MPGs and distance until empty.

i always chuckle at these fuel posts. . .

4runners and fuel dont go together well, thats why i dont concern myself with worrying about efficiency. instead, i just know how low i can go before i need gas :)

I also wonder the same thing. Sometimes I can fill up to 17.5 gallons but that is my truck shutting off at turns to get to the gas station :)
I guess I would go with what Ripcord would say. I usually hate seeing the low fuel light so I avoid it a lot. My fuel light comes on when Ive reahed around 250 miles, I drive mostly on the highway to work.

Ive gotten over 18 gallons in on a few occasions (18.6 once, no spillage), some have never been able to, others can, i don't like to push it that far.

I fill up until it comes out on long trips, and I can usually get 19 in there. Maybe I'm just an oddball.....

This is one of those threads I've always wanted to start, but been too afraid to cuz I'd be torched and scolded for not using the "search function", so I'm glad somebody else did. I too have my Ultra-Gauge programmed at 18 gallons, so I'm going to change it to 17. Thanks.

Without the Ultragauge, I have around 305ish miles on the tank, before the gas light came on. I need to fill it up and see what I got...

Hoping to gain some more MPGs with my new UltraG.

do you live and work in a 5 mph speed zone retirement community? how the hell do you pull that mileage off

Ugh, the best tank I've had so far is 220 miles... last one was 190 miles. Got a bit of city driving in there, but I try to take it easy on the pedal. The 220 was coming back from Seattle to Spokane, cruise control set at 68. Granted, I generally treat the gas light as the boss of when I get gas, but that seems to come on around 12 gallons down.
