What kind of actual MPG can 05 v6 2wd get? I am getting actual 16-17 for my 03 v8 2wd with 75% local and 25% freeway. I can get 17-18 for 25% local and 75% freeway. Can the v6 get 20 mpg? I am thinking about trading in my 03 v8 for a 05 v6 for better mileage. Back when I bought the 03 the gas was only $1.50 per gal or less. Is it worth it? I don't do any towing.

I have a 4wd I know, but this may help since I am not sure how many 2wd t4rs' there are out there.
I am on my 3rd tank.
1st tank was 80% City 20% Highway @ 17.5 MPG (CALCULATED NOT COMPUTER)
2nd tank was 40% City 60% Highway @ 20.1 MPG (CALULATED NOT COMPUTER)
Average acceleration (only one near WOT) Shifting @ around 1800 RPM. A 2wd should yield a 1-2 MPH better diff since there is a bit less weight and less parasitic loss.

According to the car computer, I'm getting about 17 or 18 mpg. I do 85% highway driving and have a 2005 4x4 V6. These stats are from using the 2WD mode though. We're getting 6-8" of snow tomorrow and I'll be using 4x4 for the first time!

Don't switch for fuel economy
The 1-2 mpg difference will take decades to recoup. And you will be losing a pile of money on the depreciaition. You will never recoup that in fuel savings.
If you have initially bought the V6, you would have saved about $1000-1500 in cost, and you would also be saving a small amount of money on gas, and probably insurance as well.
If you drive 15,000 miles a year, and fuel costs $1.80 a gallon average, let's say the V6 gets 16mpg avg, and the V8 14mpg avg, a 2mpg difference. Then the actual difference in fuel costs between the two engines is about $241/yr. If you lose just $5000 in depreciation (probably more), it would take about 20 years to see the savings in fuel.

Yeah.......What they all said. Also, I've noticed that if you allow the V6 to idle for any sufficient amount of time, it will affect your overall mileage. I do about 60/40-city/hwy and get about an 17.5-18.5 mpg average on a tank. I do NOT use the computer to achieve the avg. as I've noticed that it tends to give you a false 2-3 mpg avg. more per fillup. I am a soft footed driver who uses only occasional bursts if needed to get into the flow of traffic. I do like the fact that the "05 V6 has the 5 spd tranny over my "04 V6's 4 spd lugging up a long hill. :driving:
I'll mirror some of the other posts here and say keep your '03 V8 until you pay it off.

As for highway driving, there are a lot of variables that affect fuel consumption...
A) Do you drive like an old fart at 62MPH (with slight variation)
B) Coast between 62-70 depending on the flow! (Including using cop cars as "moving with traffic")
C) Set the flow at 72-75
D) I care not, how fast you drive, as long as its not near me.
E) I draft with the first large vehicle I see and use him to buffer the head wind.

Now for some more useless speculation...
If gas prices go sky high a few years from now, the V8 owners might have a real hot-potato on their hands that they couldn't even give away. The V6 might actually be worth more.
It's very early to see actually long term results, but I would hypothesize that with the addition of the 5-speed tranny in the 2005 V6 that the mpg would increase slightly.
The higher the price of gas, the more your savings would be.
Now for some more useless speculation...

I average about 19.5-20mpg (hand calculated; in 2wd mode; 95% highway/ 5% city) at average freeway speeds of 80mph+ (too much drag at higher speeds). I do get stuck in some occasion traffic, but not real bad. I lose about 1-1.5mpg in 4wd mode. Best avg mpg I got was around 21-21.5mpg when driven at conservative speeds on the highway in 2wd mode.
Due to the recent heavy rains, I've been running mine in 4wd and I've been getting about 16.5-17mpg (average speeds of 70-75mph on highways). 16.5mpg seems pretty low to me, but I did recently added a Yakima Megawarrior basket w/extns on my 4R and there is definitely alot of drag even with the fairing on. I plan on getting a sunroof wind deflector to increase the aerodynamics by flowing more air up & over the basket. btw, I run on premium gas.
IF I had a V8, I would keep it. If Toyota would make the V8 w/the multi-mode 4wd, I'd trade mine in right away since it doesn't look like TRD is gonna make a supercharger for the 4.0 V6

After about 10k miles, I am averaging 17.5 - 18.5 in the city and in on the highway.
In the city I average speeds of 45 - 65 mph. With the occasional burst for traffic avoidance.
On the highway I average 70 - 85 mph also with the occasional burst for passing.
Any Idea why I'm not getting my 21 mph on the highway. Do you think it's because of the speed. Is 80 too fast for milage control.

I have about 2500 miles on my 4WD, and overall, I am averaging about 21-22 MPG (85% highway, 15% city). I have found that mileage decreases over 75 MPH and even more so over 80 MPH. Where I get ~25 at 70 MPH (based on a 2 gallon burn), I decrease to 20 at 75 MPH and around 17 at 80 MPH. Around town, I have found that the 4spd is not good at selecting the right gear for the speed. If the RPM's are below 1500, downshift to 3rd. You will get better mileage around town.
Note: All values are hand calculated. Computer regularly states 27-28 on the highway at 70 MPH.

I get just over 20mpg driving 70/30 highway/city hand calculated. Reads 22.3 on the readout. It has gotten consistently better during the first 8k miles. Don't know that it would be a good financial move to do a trade in so soon though. Unless you have conections at a dealership.

Mileage also got better with time
My V6 also got better after 10,000 miles or so. I see about 2mpg better than the same period last year. My mostly city driving (25mph average for the week) and short trips were getting me 14.5 mpg. Now I am seeing closer to 16-17mpg for the same type of driving. Probably the engine is well broken in by now.
On a drive to and from Okemo Mt in Ludlow, VT a couple weeks ago the mileage was about 22mpg total.
