add another 12v socket, tap into socket in trunk?

is this possible?

i would like to add an additional outlet in the back seat for my passengers and was wondering if i could just tap into the wires from the second 12v socket found in the trunk. i really don't ever use the one back there...kinda out of place.

that being said, if i can do it, i assume two things can't be plugged in at the same time since they run off the same circuit. the plugs would really only be for iphone/ipad charging and not for anything huge like a fridge or laptop computer. i don't have the 12v constant mod either, fyi.

You can just splice off of the wires from the trunk outlet. Just make sure you have power on the center terminal of the added outlet.

What about tapping into the same line twice at two different points...would that work? What I want to do is run a line to each side of the t4r in the back seats. This would still be for cell phone charging only.

I believe the standard outlet in the 4R is 15 amp. Just do not exceed that and use 14 gauge wire for your new outlets and you will be fine.

Matt,

Most cell phones charge at between 1 to 1.5 amps. If you look at the out side of the actual cell phone charger it'll actually tell you (Output: 5VDC @ 1.3A)

This goes for all chargers. As long as whatever you're plugging in doesn't exceed 15 amps for the circuit (that means all of the devices "A" added up) it'll be fine.

As was mentioned, make sure your connections are using good quality in line splices, are insulated, and you're using 14 AWG or lower cable, and all should be fine.

Or if you want to run something larger in the future, all you would need to is to run that 12V cable to a blank spot on the fuse block (of which there are several) and then tie that to the battery. This is a little more advanced though.

I have since shifted my focus. Going on what some others have posted on here, I'm going to tap into the trunk 12v power with a 2 or 3 outlet. I know how to do that.

Here's my "new" idea. I want to run 2 or 3 iPhone cords to the rear seats and hide them in the interior plastic. Here's my question: If I did this, is it ok to keep the cords plugged into the outlet even though they won't always be in use? I don't want to fry anything or use any unneeded power. Or would a switch be better?
