ADD canister relocation

So i took my rig on her maiden voyage this weekend. She did amazing! But, while off road, i knocked loose the ADD canister (from my research thats what it is) that is in the drivers side wheel well. Has anyone found a good place to relocate this too within the engine compartment? Are there any issues with doing that? Has anyone else experienced this?

I was going to re-position mine as the one on my 97' Ltd rusted out on one side !
My Toyota dealer wanted over $230 for a new one, so I patched the rusted hole and wrapped a load of duct tape around it to seal it and then placed it in an old Yogurt container and made a couple of metal brackets to hold it in place. It's been working just fine ever since.

I see no reason why you could not re-locate it in the engine bay just as long as the vacuum pipes reach. There isn't much room though that's why I left mine under the wheel arch !

That's weird, mine never had one (Factory diesel).

When I put the V8 in I just plumbed into vac as with other vac pipes, it works flawlessly.

Have you tried just not running one?

Well, when it got knocked loose we tried to wire tie it in place, but it got knocked loose again, so we disconnected it and plugged the line with a stick, didn't seem to have any issues the rest of the weekend. I'm still not real sure what it does/how it works and how plugging the line may be affecting things.

Well it works fine direct on mine.

Uses a single vac line that "T's" to both VSVs and just runs to the manifold, and a vac line to each port on the ADD actuator.

Maybe it was a diesel thing as they ran a vac pump.

I'd be tempted to plumb it in like that and see how it goes.. its easily reversable and if there are no obvious ill effacts, it just eliminates another point of failure.

Diesels run a dedicated vacuum pump as there is usually no restriction (throttle) in the intake system so minimal negative pressure when idling and positive pressure in the case of a turbocharged engine. Petrols have a throttle restriction so run much more of a vacuum in the intake manifold.

Petrol Surfs / 4Runners therefore have a vacuum reservoir in the front left wheel arch (bad place to locate it IMO) to give a bit of redundancy in the vacuum system should the engine cut out, so you can switch in / out of 4WD perhaps a couple of times.

Finally got around to fixing mine this weekend. I ended up just welding two bolts in essentially the same location, just tucked further up into the wheel well. We'll see if it works out. Can't get my phone to load a picture though....

the original bolting location was to the lower backside of the white spot, just out of the camera shot
