What is moving and how is it powered when ADD is disconnected? Is the front drive shaft powered by the engine and moving when you are driving in 2 wheel drive. Is it connected to the passenger side hub and powering it? If not, i.e. if the passenger side hub spins by the power of momentum on the road, how does the driver connect it to engine power?

On an ADD truck, the wheels are permanently connected to the CV shafts. As the wheel turns, the half-shaft turns. The passenger-side halfshaft is always connected to the front driveshaft through the differential, and as that shaft turns, so does the driveshaft. The driver-side halfshaft is connected or disconnected from the differential via a mechanism on the axle tube. The driveshaft spins freely with the passenger side CV shaft until the driver selects 4wd, at which point the transfer case connects the trans to the front driveshaft and begins powering it. At the same time, the ADD mechanism on the drivers side halfshaft connects it to the front differential, and voila! Four Wheel Drive.

WRONG. I took the wheel and brake caliper off of the front passenger side of my ADD SUV after this thread was started. When I turned the rotor and hub by hand the main front drive shaft that passes from the transfer case to the front differential did not move while the CV joint and adjacent shafts did. In fact given how little resistance there was I doubt that the differential was moving.:lmao:
