What primer/paint combo did you go with? Did it come out as nice as you planned? I'm leaning towards Rustoleum self-etching primer and Rustoleum Professional semi-gloss black enamel, but still open to ideas. Post a pic when you can.

2 cans of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2x Paint+Primer, flat black (used 1.25 cans)
2 cans of Rustoleum Hammered Black (used 1 can, will probably spray the other can over the next two days as I only have like 30 minutes of daylight after work and can only do one face at a time)

Painting a heavy bumper is a difficult thing. Elaborating on 'one face at a time', I had to paint it against the concrete wall of my porch thing because the bumper wants to lean forward or backwards. So I'd spray a side, wait for it to dry, flip it around, do the opposite side.

Paint choice was at the suggestion of Scotty, though he didn't say 'Painters Touch 2x', he did suggest doing something like rusto flat black, hammered, then flat black over top. I think it looks good, certainly acceptable. Did have some minor runs that are basically invisible after the hammered topping. Not sure if I'll follow up with any coats of flat black, don't mind the hammered look. Definitely not as extreme as the cap of the spray can would indicate.

I'll try to snap some pics in the morning as the sun is coming up since it'll be too dim out to get anything worth while when I get home in the evening. I'm thinking it'll be beautiful from 10 feet away, acceptable up close. Fine by me. My prep work and patience with spray cans was pretty pathetic.

Regarding your paint choice, I could never have pulled a semi gloss off. The hammered does have some gloss to it, but I think the hammered aspect helps mask imperfections. Had I done gloss, I'm sure it would have ended up streaky. Avoidable if you're good with spray cans. I've lost my touch.

I was planning on hanging it from the 2"x8" joists under the patio cover so I can get all sides of the bumper on each coat. I want to go with a satin black, but can't have any textured finish - our trails are very dusty in the summers and I want something I can brush the dust off between washes and textured finishes just smear dust rather than being able to wipe it off.

I wonder if a clear coat over a flat black would solve that problem?

Me personally... I'd still get streaking doing a clear coat with my anti-technique.

I think the hammered, despite being textured, would do well with dust. It's slick to the touch. Anyway, here are the pics. 1 or 2 coats of flat black, 1 coat of hammered... and going to do another when I get home.

Looking good - Just a suggestion: make sure to get plenty of paint in those shackle holes if you plan on using them at all. That was the first wear area on mine.

Also, with hammered, ALWAYS start that 2nd coat with just a little misting - it will do that separation and cracking if you go too heavy.

Awesome, thanks for the tips. My d ring shackles arrived the other day so yes I'll definitely be using them. Will be sure to give them extra attention when I paint today. Interesting about the hammered, I've always felt that you can get away with more in subsequent coats, but haven't worked with this paint before.

I believe you were required to put in a shipping address when you paid on PayPal. That's when I put mine in but I don't know if it was required or not. I assume it was.

Yeah, I was local pickup.

I got it mounted today. Almost snapped my wrist like 5 times trying to get the holes drilled properly - not the two that you're supposed to drill, but enlarging the pre-drilled holes. Bit kept getting snagged and jamming the drill (120v, 9 amps I believe).

Tips/Whatever:

Test fit and enlarge all holes in the mounting plate (not the threaded ones for the actual bumper to connect to - those miraculously were perfect)

I was correct in my assumption that the oval holes that were already drilled for me were not perfect inside, it wasn't a burr (though some were, as pictured) but a lump. This definitely contributed to me snapping off a bolt during a test mount so uhh look out for these imperfections and deal with them when you get the bumper.

3/4 D-Ring shackles work perfect
I got the Smittybilt ones available everywhere.

Use a floor jack to lift the SOB up for final mounting.
My back was already in ruins from lifting it around the yard, and my girlfriend thought this was my worst investment ever since she's still waiting on a ring :lmao: (she also doesn't know I ordered a $2000 topper this morning for my truck) so I didn't bother asking her for a hand. It went very fast to screw the three bolts in per side.

Idunno if I put the two bolts in upside down for the holes you have to drill. They took some tapping to get slid in to place and I'm not about to remove em. Still have some trimming to do, I guess - the plastic wheel liner extends far and is visible, I'm assuming people cut it.

As she sits with the d-rings and 54w of LED spots (Bumper a little dirty as it was outside through rain after last coat of paint, AND note I have 1" body lift)

Further away - note, I mentioned i had SR5 flares at time of order. Who the %@#$ knows if I got the right one. The bumper sticks out pretty far. I'm over the whole thing and have been since sometime in August so it is what it is.

Thanks - yeah, the body lift gap doesn't bother me, just mentioned it to others who may be wondering. I'm still wondering about how off the bumper is from the fenders, since it was asked when I ordered I have to assume that they do make two different bumpers to fit flush with SR5 or Limited flares. Mine would definitely be more flush with limited flares... so... someone who mentioned they have a limited may be in the same boat as I'm in and get the wrong bumper (mine) Sorry, we both lose. I'm cool with it though.

Wired up the LED turn signals like a doofus this afternoon, cold and rainy out. If I had given it some thought I probably would have opted to not order the turn signals and cut outs and do the corner light blinker mod. Additionally, I would have wired flat spade crimps or whatever they're called to the lights and shoved them in the factory bulb holders. Drivers side I used butt connectors, passenger side I used the easy-splice connectors and maintained the factory harness. No explanation, had enough parts to do both the same way. Also wired up those LED spot lights. Still need to run a switch but holy moly they're bright.

Gonna go explore a trail tomorrow and take some better non-driveway pics and throw them up here. Hope everyone's bumper arrives soon! If you don't have a 9/16" drill bit order one now. Also, if you don't have a 1/2" shank drill and can't find a 9/16" with 3/8" shank, order that now. Otherwise you're not gonna be able to get it on. Lastly, I suggest drilling a smaller hole prior to using the 9/16. Made it easier for me...

I didn't bother with any sort of drilling lubricant because you're drilling upside down, and I didn't have any, but the bit is shot after drilling two holes, and got bent slightly rounding out the burrs and lumps in the other mounting holes. And my wrist is definitely sprained. Sorry I didn't take installation pictures, I don't think you get directions with the bumpers (I sure didn't) so if any 3rd genners have questions let me know and I'll do a TL;DR writeup with childish illustrations and some pics.
