Adding a receiver to a 4th Gen T4R

I am looking for a 4th gen T4R and would like to know what is involved in putting a receiver on a vehicle that does not already come with a receiver? What do I need besides the receiver? Are 4Runners with a receivers equipped differently? I would also like to know if adding a roof rack to a 4Runner that does not have one is a big deal? The parts could be aftermarket or Toyoda stock. Factory or aftermarket would be determined by performance, availability, price and difficulty in installation.

Adding a hitch reciever is a simple job you can do yourself in the driveway in 15 minutes. Buy an aftermarket hitch specific for the 4th Gen T4R, or sometimes you can find an OEM one on this forum in the classified section, and bolt it on. Curt 13445 is a good one or Hidden Hitch has one too. All T4Rs will have the mounting holes in the frame. Four bolts each side on the frame rails.

Not sure about the roof rack but I believe they all have mounting holes in the roof track.

Right, both are bolt-on and you can probably find used parts pretty easily.

Just an FYI, Reese, Hidden Hitch and Drawtight are all the EXACT same thing, only difference is which sticker is put on it. So find the cheapest of those 3 and go for it. I love the Reese I got, all those hitches are made by cequent:

Cool guys! Thanks for the reply's! I do all my own wrenching and it will be a breeze to bolt that stuff in if the holes are already there. I will continue the search for a 4Runner with a better idea of what to look for!

Reese, Hidden Hitch and Draw-Titeuse to be separate companies..but they merged a few years back.

U-Haul also uses Draw-Tite.

If you go buy the 5000lb hitch it's an easy install. If you go the next one up (like I did) you have to remove the rear bumper. Not a big deal just more time.
