Adding air to the Spare Tire

up, but have the tire turned so the stem is at the rear of vec. not on either side or front.
 
Geez, you part-gumby guys must be the ones stealing all the spares around here. I can't imaging airing the spare valve up without dropping it. Tried to hook my spare valve side down and it didnt want to fit in the lug openings. You guys have hitches and regular size tires?

Not really that hard as long as you have the stem rotated towards the rear of the vehicle. I can get a pressure gauge up there as well to determine whether or not I even want/need to add air. Suggest wearing safety glasses...lots of crud will usually break loose.

I do like the recommendation to lower and lube, though. Never considered that aspect. I did have to use my spare for real last year, but it came down fine even though it was the first time in 5 years that it had ever been lowered. Think I'll still drop it and hit with a shot of something the next time I'm looking for something to do.

Sometimes salt corrosion causes air to leak slowly out of the beaded areas. I'd suggest having the tire taken off and remounted with some sealant. You're local qualified tire center should be able to do that for you.

Good recommendation. I'll lower the tire, fill with air, and inspect for any potential leaks or deficiencies. It's a good peace of mind to have a solid spare in the back - you never know when you or someone you know is going to need it.
 
There's also a method of adding a little water to the valve to check if there's any air leaking from the core. I doubt this is the problem.

Also, finding where the air is leaking from on a 32" wheel is not easy. I recommend a quick visual inspection for nails and then look for the guilty culprits i.e. where the wheel weights are added to the wheel. If there's a groove caused by the wheel weight, chances are that's the source of your problems.
 
About adding air to the spare

I got a friend of mine who fabricates Hydraulic, Pneumatic hoses to make a hose that screws onto the valve stem of the spare, and reaches back to the trailer hitch with a valve stem on the end
He made a bracket for it to attach to the side of trailer hitch , out of harms way
So that's how I add air to my spare, I check it the 1rst of every month
I also greased the shit out of the mechanism and chain
Should be good for a lifetime lol

Thank you for bumping an old thread, I probably would have left it until I got a flat before trying to find out how to lower the spare :shrug:

As it turns out mine is on the truck with the valve facing down, I guess this is incorrect.
 
I use one of these things. Fills both ways so you don't have to drop the tire.
Pull vs push as it were.
You can do it from underneath without lowering the tire.
But then I have a lift too that makes it easier :bluejump:
