Adding Music to Youtube

I used to make some videos of my adventures quite a few years ago. Loved documenting trips and adding some of my favorite music to the videos and looking back on them. Then YT became very strict with copyright laws and stripped most of my videos of the music.

I want to get back into documenting some of our adventures as well as some of my mountain biking rides but definitely don't want to lose the music to them.
I know GoPro and other similar software have free music to use but I want to add my music.

What is everyone's experience recently with adding whatever music you want to a video? Is there a way to add songs without them stripping the audio?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

IANAL nor do I play one on TV. I'm not clear on what you mean by "my music". If it is music that you wrote and performed then you own the copyright on it and Youtube should not strip it off. If you are referring to music heard on the radio or played by most bands then YT will strip it off and/or pull the video down if you can't display that you have the rights to use the music.

Since I'm not musically inclined I use music from the creative commons when I do anything multi media that I plan to share.

of the choices there FMA ( Free Music Archive ) is great for browsing but I can't seem to get thier search engine to work for me.

When I have a specific sound in mind and willing to pay something reasonable to get exactly what I want for a video I like to use the search engine on BeatPick: Music licensing for Film, Tv and Advertising use (license pre-cleared music)
You can say you want a song that sounds Aggressive, Instrumental, and sound like Tool it will come back with rather good options. Only drawback Is it will not let you filter by license up front.

Sorry for my unclear original post. By 'my music' I was referring to actual bands that you hear on radio.

Its baffling because I see so many amateur videos out there with music from top artists and would be shocked if all if them received licensing.

Agreed, Not sure what the incidental music rules are, and I'm sure that a lot of the ones I've seen whee I know the song is a known band are uploaded from outside the USA where the rules may be different.

I read earlier this week that RIAA is on the war path suing folks for youtube videos again. So I just play it safe and stick to things that are public domain or creative commons.

I've found that there is a lot of good music out there that is in the creative commons, but that will depend on your tastes and the effect you are trying to achieve in your videos.

There are other ways to host videos that are not part of the Google-plex which may suit your needs. Problem with a lot of them now-a-days may be the other content these refuge sites have picked up that will share space with your video.
