Adding Nav to 4Runner

I've read alot on this forum and OEMVALUE.com about adding the '06 nav to a my '05 4-runner. Is there any reason I can't add what would have come on the 4Runner rather than a unit from a different toyota.

Mines an '05 Limited V6 ( which is why I don't have nav)

Thanks

Jeff

Is this a dumb question or just hard to answer. It just seems odd that I see a ton of questions about adding a setup from a Solara or Camry, is there any reason I couldn't put in the unit designed for the 4-runner?

You have three options. If money means nothing to you you can order the 4runner nav from your dealer and whip out your credit card. If you are cheap like the rest of us you can buy the Toyota Solara or Camery units fron oemvalue or you can install an after market unit from the OEM vender.

I chose to install an Eclipse AVN5435 into my base SR5. Given the extra features, I could not be happier. I do not have Blue tooth but I can play DVDs and see the rear camera at any time.

See my thread titled AVN5435 for all of the details.

Is there a difference between the OEM Solara/Camry Nav system and the 06 Runner Nav system? Stupid question, but the pics on the OEMValue site look to be the same as the 06 Runner system.

They are actually different.. What i've gathered is..

E7001 - Solara Navigation (Digital Amp)
E7003 - Camry Navigation (Analog Amp)
E7007 - Sienna (2006) (Green) (Digital Amp w/MP3, 4 Disc, Bluetooth)
E7008 - 4Runner (2006) (Orange) (Digital Amp w/MP3, 4 Disc, Bluetooth)

I've looked at the wiring diagrams for both the E7007, and E7008, they look identical.

If anyone wants them, Ill post them.

So........I think I already know the answer to this question, but: since I have the standard audio system on my '04 SR5, am I screwed if I want to get the '06 4Runner Nav system? The Bluetooth option would kick tail but I am afraid that I'm hosed. I suppose then that I have to decide between the Camry OEM and the Eclipse. Anyone have any close-ups of the Eclipse system installed? I saw some pics on GlennD's post, but I'd like to see the detail around the edges...I know, picky picky...

Right now I am putting the new sienna 06 nav unit into my car... I have an SR5 04' so it originally came with a NON JBL setup... I intially put in the scion unit, then the 05 camry unit (non JBL) and now the JBL Nav 06' unit.

Basically the difference between the JBL and NON JBL unit is between the head unit and the amp, not the vehicle wiring itself. So I was able to throw it into my vehicle that way... Its alot of work cuz I had to extend the harness to get the amp under my passenger... I will probably be moving to the trunk area when I get my hands on a 4runner amp and sub.

All in all its alot but not too much work. I have to wire a microphone, add steering wheel controls, find a rse unit, extend the wire harness, and a whole bunch of small things to make it pretty much what the 06 runner nav package offers.

Wow... You've had alot of different Nav units.

Where did you find the 06 Sienna Nav and how much $$ was it?

I and others have been asking why OEMVALUE doesn't offer the actual 4Runner Nav units on their forum. Their response was that the 4Runner Nav units were inferior to the others. While that may have been true before, the 2006 units are THE BEST Toyota currently offers on any vehicle.

I would like to buy an actual 2006 4Runner Nav unit.

Wow - thanks! A couple of questions:

1) Where did you pick up the '06 Nav (and how much, if you don't mind my asking)?

2) Once you're done, could you post a parts list, rough install overview, etc.?

I've done dozens of stereos in my time, but this is a fairly new tihng for me...just a gentle shove in the right direction and i'll be good to go. Thanks again!!!

I got mine on EBAY! 1695 + cost of JBL amp

I haven't snapped too many pics just yet but will start as I progress through the install... Jomama has been a tremendous amount of help with this project as it seems he is always 2 steps ahead of me. This is his thread:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14650

In regards to what OEMVALUE has to say about the unit I think is just BS... Basically the reason they don't sell the sienna or 4Runner nav unit is because they simply can't get their hands on them... The 4runner unit is installed and manufactured in Japan while the Sienna units are manufactured in the states... Actually in SoCal (acording to the manu. sticker on the nav unit). I am assuming they have a source somewhere in the states for the camry and solora units. That is why you will find Sienna units floating around on EBAY from time to time but never have I seen a 4Runner unit on EBAY yet.

Interesting, I've been wondering about this since Toyota changed the NAV on the '06s and a recent ebay listing stating you can use the Sienna NAV on a non-JBL system. Thanks for taking the time to figure it out! If it's not too much trouble, could you post up pictures or instructions on what you did? Once I get the funds and can find one, I'd like to do the same thing on mine. One more thing, how does the sound compare to the Scion unit you had? I've become attached to mine and it would really suck if the sound quality on the NAV was a lot worse. Thanks!

The wiring diagrams would be great.. Thanks..

Thanks again! I'm assuming there simply aren't any to be had right now, but just in case can you tell me what search keywords you used to locate the NAV system on EBAY? Thanks again!

On ebay I search with keywords like: toyota nav, toyota navigation, etc. I keep it a very broad search just so I know i don't miss anything. Their were a few here and there around thanksgiving but haven't seen any since. I have a feeling more and more people are catching on to what the newer ones have to offer.

Yeah when I plan to strip down my interior to get the final pieces in like the mic and hopefully the RSE, etc. I will defintely take pics for you guys to identify what is what. Basically all you would need to make it work is to get your hands on the schematic of the particular digital JBL amp you end up getting your hands on and find the speaker channel outs and route that back up to behind your head unit and into the toyota harness that has your speaker wires. Keep in mind though that when I purchased my setup this was already done for me by the seller, so I just know what was done but didn't do the acutal 'doing' myself. IICR, you have your choice between the seqouia, sienna, and 4runner digital amps. Not sure about any other digital amps since I haven't been able to get my hands on any other model amps. Keep in mind too that all these amps have different number of channels... 6, 8, and 10 speaker amps.

THe sound of the scion HU is a huge improvement over stock, but the analog amp that I had with the camry unit simply kicked butt. I thought the scion unit was good, but the camry one was awesome... Pretty much all of my friends asked "Is that the stock stereo or did you upgrade w/ amps?" They were very impressed with the sound and their was nice deep bass, well over the stock and still alot better than the scion unit. However, the new digital amp that I have now isn't anywhere near as good as the camry one. I was told it was out of a seqouia but I am not impressed. I am currently working on getting an actual 4runner amp cuz a friend of mine says it is better than the seqouia and sienna amps... but that is all still yet to be scene.
