Adding TE gauges to SR5...W/Pics

I know you can read the mileage from the obdii port for how many miles you've driven since the last reset, so it has to be in the ecu somewhere. My Torque app with the extra PID's installed shows me this information.

I'm assuming there's a way to reset it from the obdii port, but have no idea what machine you would need to do this. I don't recall seeing anything in the techstream software either, but I wasn't really looking for that info either, so it may be possible.

If I had some time I would boot up the techstream machine and see what is in there, but I'm heading out of town tomorrow morning and haven't finished all the work in the shop yet! Still have 2 more jobs to print and laminate!!!

What looks to be Crwal Control Icons

This makes me think this was out of a TE. But clearly I'm stumbling my way through life and have no clue what is going on.

Does anyone know if the dealer can clear the maint light with a computer, or is the only reset on the unit itself?

Worth mention. I plugged into my Genisys EVO and attempted to clear codes to see if it would kill the light. NOPE

I'm not sure if this will help or just muddle the waters more, but I ran out to my 2010 LE and snapped a pic for you (dust/dirt just mean it's loved right?):
It has all the same icons as the TEs do they just don't light up ever (the TE only lights that is).

Also, for what it's worth, the maintenance reminder reset procedure is essentially the same. The only difference is that when you turn your key to the "ON" position, I push the START/STOP button twice without putting my foot on the break (mimics turning key to ACC then to ON without starting the car).

I did try the reset procedure for my wife's 12 RX350 because it has the push button start. Basically I put my foot on the brake and nothing else different.

I spoke to a guy in NY that said he thinks the cluster has been "modified" before. He said there are not many reasons a 2012 4runner would have 3700 miles on it. But the real sign is the maint light. He said it track mileage and then blinks when getting close. But when you do not reset the light before changing the odometer, the maint light chip tries to calculate from negative miles driven and cause it to glitch out like this.

I hope I explained that correctly.

So I'm shipping got off to NY tomorrow along with the original cluster to get a co plate reprogramming.
 
I know you've reprogrammed the millage, but many years ago I would fix up old cars and often would change gauges etc. Out of curiosity I decided to find out what was legal to do in Massachusetts. Tampering with the odometer in any way was illegal, even if it was meant to show legit millage. I was told the correct procedure would be to take it to the State Police and they would affix a small plaque to the inside of the drivers door showing the discrepancy in the millage.

So I said thank you, kept my mouth shut, and went on my merry way.
 
The actual mileage HAS to be stored in the on-board computer as well doesn't it? I can't imagine it only stored in the gauge cluster which could easily be swapped out. If you sold this to a private party they would have no idea the cluster had been swapped out!

I don't really care about third party. but you are correct, if you buy a used vehicle there is a chance the cluster could have been swapped and you would never know. To my understanding there is no other mileage tracker on these vehicles. But if there is, in my case it will still be correct. I am having the mileage set on the TE cluster to the exact same as what on the SR5 and truck. I even took the time to let it click over to the next mile so there were no lingering tenths. so even if there is another tracker, mine will still be accurate to within less than a tenth of a mile.

That said, if I sell my SR5 cluster to someone on ebay, they can swap it in their truck and it will show 37k miles regardless of whats really on the truck.

GOOD NEWS!

With the help of Dominic from the above mentioned ebay service. We got the Cluster figured out.

The cluster I bought from ebay had already been "adjusted" in the past. This explains why the mileage was only 3700 miles on a 2012 TE. What happened is pretty simple really. When you adjust the mileage on these odometers you have to consider that the maint light is just a mileage tracker, IF you roll the mileage backwards the counter trys to compute a negative number causing the error I was getting.

Dominic took both of my clusters and cloned the new one to be exactly like the old one. So there should be zero issues for warranty or if something is stored in the computer someplace for the mileage.

I did have to pull the truck forward about 6 feet and back to bow around the driveway, I hope that does not throw anything off.
 
I still can't believe the cluster holds the mileage.

Is that true for other Toyotas?

Do I have to fear buying a used Toyota?

2nd Gen ?
3rd Gen ?
4th Gen YES
5th Gen YES

And yes, especially lease turn in vehicles. People roll them back to keep from paying mileage.

I know Toyota, Mercedes, GM, KIA and Honda all store it in the cluster and it can be changed in may vehicles in less than 15 min. 4Runners take about an hour.

When did the LE/TE gauges change from the amber to the bluish? The blue cluster might clash pretty badly with all the other amber in my 2012 SR5

The TE and LE have always had the optitron gauges. The only model with the amber gauges is the SR5.

Worth mention: the TE gauge cluster has a smoked colored cover and the SR5 has a clear. So the optitron gauges are not as bright as you might think given the darkened lense.
 
I just wanted to give a plug to Dominic at TV and Nav 2 Go.

The cluster I purchased had the miles rolled back before, so rolling them back forward for my purposes posed a bit of a challenge with the oil maint light.

Dominic worked with me and we shipped the gauges back and forth until we got them right.

He now has the files for both styles of 2010-2013 Gauges.

If someone else finds a set of TE or LE gauges and does the swap, this guy has the ability and skill to do it.

Just an FYI to anyone wanting to do this swap. The truck was in the dealer getting a vent looked at and I ran into the tech that did the "gauge swap" service for me.

I do not know if I mentioned this before, but here is a CYA if you decide to do this swap.

-Order Used gauges
-Plug them into your dash to confirm correct operation reset oil maint light (VERY IMPORTANT STEP)
-send gauges to Dominic to be programmed MORE than your current miles (I did 100)
-Get gauges back from Domininc and plug them in to test operation again and note mileage.
-when your are withing a few miles of the programmed miles take it to the dealer (dash already apart) and pay the $100 to have them drop the gauges in when the mileage matches.

When you do it this way the mileage and the gauge swap is logged in your service record and cannot be disputed down the road.

I have been a little scatter brained lately, so if anything needs better explaining I would be happy to explain.
