Adding USB charging ports

Hello all,


I have been thinking about adding some USB charging ports. I have a couple posts where some have extended a built in USB from their after market radios. Other have tapped the cig lighter port. I was wondering if there is anything that could fit in place of the ash tray and be wired in. I saw a couple of amazon products that have a transformer with a mini usb port. I'm really looking for a way to have the full USB ports as the wife and I have different brand phones. I suppose the bare minimum is a transformer with some USB ends that can attached to the dash board. Any ideas?

A little different than what you're asking, but I wired some extra 12v outlets for this exact reason. One comes out by the drivers right knee to run the gps, and two come out by the passengers left knee to charge whatever might be necessary.

A completely different direction all together, they sell car chargers that also have a USB plug in on them. We've used it to charge a micro USB device while having an apple device charging through the USB port on it.

I did one of these in my 1999 to get a voltmeter too. Replaced on of the power outlets. Installing one on my son's 1996 and we are just going to drill a hole under his lighter and wire it in to the lighter circuit.

Yes I have. It is wires to a ON/off switch by my left leg. And the switch is getting power from a auxiliary fuse box and I have a 5 amp for this outlet. Your going to want a switch for it. Because otherwise it will on always and glow whatever color you get. And don't go overboard with trying to install a relay. Your not powering laptops through it. 5 amp is good.

Yes. If the switch has its own light, there would be a third pin that takes a ground wire.

Do all these rocker switches on amazon fit in the single slot blanks in our rigs? or do i need to buy a spacer?

It's not even close to what you said, much less "exactly".
He asked if his diagram was correct, and you said yes, and went on to talk about a third pin and a light.
There are countless options for switches- nearly anything you could imagine.
But regardless of any of those options, to answer "yes" to his question/diagram is incorrect.

Look at the diagram again. The device on the right with one leg going to ground IS the USB port device. It's the back side of it.

The switch is on the left, correctly in-line with the 12v supplying the USB device.

And I got the rocker outlet USB from eBay. Cheapest one. They are all china basically. Most rocker switches do fit in our locations. Rather then trimming the plastic of our hole. I just used trimmed the switch with a filer and that's it. Usually it will fit in perfect.

The switch I used, was a 3M, good quality switch. Actually I can add 2 separate sources of that switch. But I'm currently just got the USB wired to it.

I'd run a wire from battery with fuse inline to the on/off switch. Then from there to the USB. Same way Durk told you.

These USB outlets always stay lit. That's why you want a ON/off switch.

Just remember to turn it OF when you leave the vehicle
