Advice for 1999 4Runner 4x4 5 Speed with e-locker

I checked it out today. It's decent, but the body had some dents and scratches and to top it off NO e-locker... He said it had the button, but turns out it didn't so I passed.

I would have too. There is one here for 8800, MANual 3.4 w/elocker, if you wanna make a trip to Vegas. Ive been thinking about this one my self.

I'm beginning to wonder if this whole e-locker thing on the 99 5 speed ain't some sort of t4r.org inside joke.

Hey let's send the n00bs on a wild goose chase while we scoop up the 5 speeds and auto e-lockers. Frackin' idiots

fyi e locker ins only in 86-98 runners, 99-02 have central locking which is useless

Elockers were available up to '00. The locking center diffs (AWD feature) were first offered in the '99 and '00 Limited models, but even they (as well as the SR5s and Highlander/Sports) still had the rear locker option until '00.

I agree that the center diff lockers aren't really useful off road since regular 4hi/4lo is still better on the trails. And the 4runners equipped with CDLs still have regular 4hi and 4lo also so you might as well lock the CDL when you're on dirt and get the most traction you can.

The AWD feature (CDL unlocked) is handy on road though when it's patchy snow/ice or just slick/wet roads where regular 4wd would still bind up in places. I find myself shifting in and out of 4hi a lot in the winter because our roads are curvy. In the dry sections, my 4x4 will bind up so I go back into 2hi. But then there will be a long patch of ice and I'll have to go back into 4hi. I don't have the AWD feature, but if I did it would save me from having to shift betweeen 2hi and 4hi constantly on those days. I could just put it in 4hi, unlock the center diff and walla... AWD and no binding.

The drawback to the CDL is there's just more moving parts to break and electrical wiring to go bad. For off road I like the simplicity and strength of a hand lever actuated t-case shifter over a push-button 4wd system so I won't be swapping mine out any time soon. But a few days out of the year, I admit the "multi-mode" t-case would be nice.

For more info on the center diff locker (aka multi-mode 4x4/AWD), check out my thread explaining the t-case differences of 3rd gens..

brian is right srry for the confusion, you win some you lose some, in the 01-02 you get clear head lights and taillights with some nice interior features, in 96-00 you can have lockers but with frosted headlights and tail lights and boring interior and for some no trans temp sensor

Swing n' a miss. again

The clear headlights were 99+, as was the interior upgrades and the trans temp sensor ability.
