Advice on ECM UPDATE

So, my local Toyota dealership called me last night to inform me that my replacement dash has arrived and wanted to schedule the install. GREAT! However, I know that they are going to push the latest ECM update on me and I am asking you all if I should accept it? I thought I remember reading somewhere, that the update causes some issues that are not desirable to us 4th gen owners, but I cannot specifically recall. If any of you are better informed than me, please LET ME KNOW!

might be the preventing of the engine throttle / gas pedal response when the brake pedal is depressed update. I was just reading about this a few weeks ago. someone did the update right before they sold mine to me. ugh.

To be fair I've been playing with more BST flashed 4Runners and while I'm not particularly sold on the software throttle kill. It does seem a bit less intrusive than it is on the other models when I originally made that post.

thanks for the replies. I am now convinced that it is a bad idea to allow them to do the update. BlackWorksInc, do you think they will listen to me when I tell them NOT to do the update? Is there any way to tell if they went ahead and did the update without my permission?

Make sure the service writer understands you do not want to do the campaign and before signing the RO and turning the car over to them it says "customer declined to perform campaign at this time" or at the very least there is no line to perform it at all.

At $15 I think ill just put a piece of masking tape with that written on it over the port.

Duct tape over the OBDII port and write "DO NOT UPDATE ECM" on the invoice and underline it four times. Worked on my GT500 when I brought it in for the airbag recall.

Well if you want the dash pad replaced under warranty, dealer has to be the one to do it...

I will be purchasing a 4runner tuesday if all checks out...

I checked with the dealership.. they said there are 2 recalls on the vehicle..

one was the floor mat sticking to the gas pedal, they adjust the pedal

two was related to the brake, the ECU had to be updated...

Sorry for being a newb, so the consensus is don't let them do this update?

Can someone please explain what the problems people are experiencing with this update? This post is the first I've heard of the update, and everyone is just saying there are "issues". What issues?:noidea:

It's hard to make an educated decision on something when you haven't been educated on it...

Well, there's been quite a few threads on this topic. Toyota wants to do to an update that effects the responsiveness of the gas pedal. Some have reported that they don't like how it effects driveability.

It has zero effect on the throttle responsiveness. It doesn't allow simultaenous braking and throttle input.

There's comments on this forum from guys who said it added a brief hesitation to throttle input. I haven't had it done, so no first hand knowledge.
