Advice Requested: I Don't Want These TRD Wheels on my 2012 4Runner

Hello 4Runner Gurus,

I just bought this 2012 4Runner SR5 and it came with TRD wheels already mounted (tires are 265-70R17). The wheels appear to be THESE (Part # PTR45-35010)

I’ve already done some searching and reading about these wheels here on the forums and I understand that opinions vary. Some people love ‘em while some hate the removable ring.

The more I look at them, the less I like them. They’re just a little too “shiny" for my taste. I think I would prefer to have simple, black wheels without the fancy, removable bling-ring with “beadlock styling.”

This vehicle is my daily driver but I intend to use it for long-distance travel and on dirt roads in the mountains. I’m a family man in my 40’s. I don't mind having some cool wheels but I want something subdued and functional.

I am completely new to the 4Runner and I am quite ignorant about aftermarket wheels. Any suggestions on alternatives for wheels? Paint them? Trade them? All advice is appreciated. Thank you.

my guess is that if you're patient enough, you will eventually find someone within 50 miles of where you live wanting to do a swap for the stock wheels.

What he said. Barring that I don't think reasonably priced used TRD wheels stay for sale very long in our buy/sell area either. I would have jumped on them 7 months ago, but that train has left the station.

As far as finding some wheels you might like try this website. They will let you "try" wheels on a profiled vehicle. They'll even let you select your vehicle's color when you get the picture up. This helped me narrow down from about 8 choices to what I bought.

I know some people over on the FJCRUISER Forums were feeling as you do about the fake beadlock rings, some even removed the rings and inserted small black "filler" plugs into the boltholes. That may be an option before you try something else.

they look so tiny on the 5th gen... i don't like them either

maybe consider the new TRD PRO model wheels... they're all black(which you like), 17"(use same tires), and they're pretty cheap(under $800)

Get the FJ or 10-13 Trail 8 hole wheels off Ebay and sell yours. I have both and love them.

I have some SR5 wheels for sale and boxed for shipping if you want them. Pics in the for sale thread. You can def sell those wheels at a pretty good price though. They're quite pricey new.

Like they say about taste though; not everyone's farts smell like roses err maybe I just said that...

I appreciate the advice and insight everyone has offered. I hadn’t thought of the FJ wheels or what others in the FJ community might doing about the “bling ring.”

Antman and jrandom are right…the wheels would look better on better tires. This current setup looks like a drag queen with a 5 o'clock shadow. Saker got me to thinking about just modifying them myself. It appears there’s quite a few people doing their own alterations and home paint jobs on these wheels. Additional research revealed the following:

TRD wheel with and without the bling ring

Removed bling ring and painted the wheels

Powder coated trim ring with black screws and black lug

Removed the bling ring and filled holes with 5/16” (8mm) black hole plugs

TRD Rock Warrior wheel with only the bling ring painted black

I would rather spend money on new tires instead of new wheels, especially if the existing wheels are high-quality and structurally sound. Plus, the idea of trying to swap wheels with someone else and/or buying new wheels before selling these sounds like a major hassle, especially on a daily driver. Rather than dealing with all that, I think I’ll first try removing the bling rings to see how the wheels look and then paint as necessary. I’m not going to be entering this thing in a car show. This vehicle is meant to be used. Seeing as how so many other people have had success with spray painting their wheels at home, I have nothing to lose by trying it.
