aemravan's build thread - project TacoRunner

Might I suggest ADS? I know they don't list for the 4th gen 4R but the front suspension is the same as the 2nd/3rd gen Tacomas and they can do custom rear shocks without issue.

ADS have been shown to have slightly more travel than the others you listed. Up to an additional inch. They also happen to be local to me here in Tucson.

Arizona Desert Shocks - Shocks proven to perform and outlast the competition

The spindle gussets were as straight forward as it gets, and at like 60-70 bucks it was a no-brainer while doing the rcv axles and new wheel bearings.

with regards to ADS, looks like now they actually do have a 4th gen-dedicated product line so I will definitely take a look at them. From a glance, they are for sure not the cheaper option of the other sets but a good quality shock with more total travel would be well worth it.

I ran ADS on my 1999 Tacoma and probably will eventually on the 4Runner. Not saying the other choices are bad but I do like ADS stuff a little more.

Nice build progress! Those RCV axles are BEEFY! I plan to get those whenever I get the Marlin Crawler kit.

Are you still using the stock 8" rear axle for the differential?

Do plan to stick with the 4.56 gearing if go to 37" tires?

Thanks! The rcv are definitely beefy.

I'm still on the stock rear axles other than 4.56 gears and air lockers. Haven't looked far enough to what the next step up would be for those yet... afraid I might like what I see lol.

As far as the gears and 37s.. I honestly don't know if I'm gonna go 37s any time soon.. its already way more car than I wheel. 95% pavement and some offroad.. if I went 37s with 4.56 gears it would be a similar step up asr the 33s and stock gears to 35s. And honestly with the v8 I haven't noticed much a difference

So all the parts except the fenders for the tacorunner project are here. I'm planning on painting the hood tomorrow while the weather is nice.

The grill and lights are looking mean ! I can't wait.

The gears are breaking in nicely, im hoping to be done with the 500 miles by end of tomorrow. Then a quick oil change and I should be good to go to try out the lockers. Cant wait.

After a slight hold up in customs, thr coastal offroad bumpers have also arrived so im anxious to get welding on the front bumper now too !

Stay tuned !

Since you spent to money to get RCV axles for the front, have you thought about getting beefier axles for the rear?

Naturally, I imagine that i'll have to beef up the rears, yea. I haven't looked too far into what the options/cost would be.

This car currently is 95% daily pavement queen, with 3 off road trips. I plan to do much more with it this year off road wise, but still nothing too crazy so the stock rear axles should hold up for a bit.

ideally the plan would be to swap the rear axles when I am doing the FJ T-case. That way I can also get slightly beefier driveshafts made, and with the down time for the swap, I could pull the rear axles, get something beefier in there, while also doing the bearings/seals, etc. But this isn't something I plan on doing at least for a year, unless the electronic Tcase takes a dump on me before then... I'd much rather spend the money on some nicer 2.5 shocks prior to diving into more drivetrain upgrades.. but we'll see what happens.

A fellow FRS owner! Thought I saw some valenti taillights in one of those pics...
Haha you sure did. Its my wife's car for the time being. Looking to get rid of it in the next few months and get something a bit bigger.

34k miles on it right now... may be the lowest mile '13 frs for sale haha

Here is what its looking like right now

Looks awesome! I have the same color but 110k miles.... lol

Should be easy to find something bigger. MKV Supra to match your MKIV? haha

I'm looking to do a swap within the year on mine, so I'm in it for the long haul.

Whe its 70 and sunny out i decided to go ahead ans spray the hood so that its ready when when the fenders come in. My neighbors always look at me funny.

Not half bad for a front yard paint job on a windy day.. got a little trash in thr clear so I may wet sand and buff if I feel up to it later, or may just leave it.

So did you order a taco or 4R front bumper from coastal?!

Due to a need for a winch and an amazingly low price for the weld it yourself kit i definitely went with coastal :) looks like everything for thr front bumper has finally arrived. Cant wait to get it together.

Price is great, I’m running their bumper and skids, I was just curious if you ordered the 4R or 2nd Gen taco bumper with the swap in progress

I know a 2nd gen plate bumper will fit a 4th gen with modification (don’t recall exactly what) so it should work. Plus you’re handy with fabricating stuff so I’m sure you’ll have no problems. Looking forward to the “finished” product.

Thanks man. Yea regardless I believe the T4R bumper is the better start. At least I know it will mount and fit up to everything in stock form. I don't anticipate MAJOR modifications to get lined up with the fender, but time will tell. Worst case scenario I may end up having to cut the ends a bit and add some additional plate, but we'll see, baby steps here :thumb3:

Got some unexpected early news yesterday regarding the McNeil fiberglass fenders. Looks like they're done and have shipped via GreyHound from Cali. No idea how long the transit will take, but I wasn't expecting them to be complete until at least the 6th of March per their original estimate. Definitely cannot wait to get them so I can get everything off the car and get the swap going.

Crossing my fingers that the door-fender gap is on the smaller side of what I have been seeing across these swaps.. some are absolutely atrocious, others came out just slightly larger than factory and something I could definitely live with. Really hoping to not have to fiberglass anything.. but I have material and experience with it in case it comes to it.. time will tell, can't wait!

on a different note, the member buying my front end is also picking up my swing out as well as the roof rack, so I am not scrambling to get everything off and get the first iteration of my own rack on the car. With the current metal prices doing crazy stuff, I wasn't able to get as low as I originally thought, but still not bad. If anyone is interested, it looks like it would be in the $650 range, of course you'd have to do your own painting of the side rails :)

Unlike my current prinsu rack, I opted to not have built-in feet on the side rails, but rater incorporate a mounting bracket to the cross bars. This will give me quite a bit of adjustment both left/right as well as front/back to really set it like I want. Hopefully the idea works out.. I should also mention that my current cross bars are at 47inches. In order to not have to cut down 10 pieces of cross bar by 1 inch, or pay someone $2-5/cut during purchasing of the rails, I decided to try the rack 1" wider at 48". Thats only .5" per side and looks like I have plenty of room to spare.

Also, one of the main reasons I looked into changing to my own design was providing different mounting points on the side rails. I didn't like having to mount half of my components through slots. So the initial idea I had was to provide holes that I could install rivet nuts into to give me a threaded location down the length of the rack. The last thing to finalize is the exact location and number of cutouts I want prior to sending it off to the laser. This also allowed me to not have the long rails just laser cut without having to be handled for bending the feet, thus cutting some cost.

The coastal rear bumper will be the last to go on, and I also can't wait to get it together. Since my tire carrier will be gone as of March 13th i'll need to get it together pretty quick before I hit the trails later in the month.. I opted just for the bare bumper with no swing outs since I felt very comfortable building my own onto it after my swing out build. Plus it saved me like 700 bucks and I already have just about all the material.. I am finalizing the design of it, but came out looking not far off from Coastals own swing out they offer.
