+1 on the V8 side.
I use aFe Pro Dry in all four of my vehicles and 1 in the past. Never had an issue with any of them. Does a great job filtering, while letting in better airflow. I like the Pro Dry in particular because its not oiled like the majority of the other filters on the market.
Take it for what its worth but I think going with a dry filter is better long term as I am sure you have read about oiled filters gunking up the MAF sensor. Even if its not true in all cases, better safe than sorry IMO.

Use on both mine , just take it out knock out the crap on the curb , blow air thru , re-install !

I have the afe cold air intake with the grey dry filter, I wash it once a year... seems to be fine.

the only good thing about the filter is service life.
oem paper filter would need to be changed out at 10k or so. so that adds to the cost.
aftermarket filter cost is more, but only need to be serviced when its really dirty, still check it out at every oil change, but can serviced whenever it really needs too, and you dont have to spend alot in the long run. can get past the 100k if cleaned regularly.

According to the manufacturers you aren't suppose to blow air through the filters, I would guess it would pack the dirt inside. Knock on curb, then vacuum or wash.

Is anyone using the AFE dry S drop in air filter on a 2018 or newer? AFEs website says and talking to someone there that 2018 and newer 4runners have a different shaped box...but doesn't seem right since k&n filters work on 2020 runners...just wondering if anyone has first hand knowledge. I think Im going to buy the afe since its what i have in my tundra and I prefer dry vs oiled...

The Pro GUARD7 Air Filter – Maximum Protection looks interesting to me.
I never really consider using anything other than OEM... pretty content with just having some filters on the shelf and changing it when needed.
I think the OEM paper filter performance is pretty good even in the desert. After a season they get pretty caked, but the exiting side is always in great shape.

Agree. Those are also my findings after my first season with a 4R in very dusty environment.
