After a month or so of ownership...(First impressions inside)

Before I do anything, I want to thank all of you for the information that I've been able to find in this forum. I've been involved in automotive (and other)forums for a long time and tend to search a lot before posting anything. When I was looking for a 4Runner, I spent a lot of time before I joined just searching through here and figuring out what things were normal, what to look out for (surprisingly little) and a lot of other information.

Thanks to the research I did on here, I picked up a 2015 4Runner Trail Premium in Super White with KDSS. My previous vehicle was a 2010 Ford Taurus SHO, which I loved when it was working. "When it was working" was the operative phrase, as it turned out to be the least reliable car I've ever owned. In 75k miles, it went through two wheel bearings, a left rear and right front strut, two sets of front and rear brakes (I spend a lot of time commuting, which is hell on a 4500lb car in stop and go traffic), two AWD power transfer units and a transmission torque converter, thankfully all but the brakes were covered under warranty. It had damn near every gadget and gizmo you could think of, but the only thing I really miss are the air conditioned seats.

After the car spent almost 4 weeks in the shop, I decided it was time to move up my replacement timetable and went to the Toyota dealer down the street. I went to high school with their finance manager, and they were able to get me a great deal on an incoming 2015 TEP with the options I wanted. I've had it about a month so far, and I'm loving it. I used to drive my Dad's '89 4Runner V6, and had fond memories of that truck. Driving this, I can feel the family lineage.

I'm impressed as hell with the truck, to say the least. While I miss the acceleration of my SHO, this isn't terrible, especially for what it is. It sits at a great height, and is a lot quieter than I thought it would be on the highway and around town. Mileagewise, I'm within .5 mpg of my SHO, but I don't need to run premium gas so that's another plus. KDSS is amazing, it corners flatter than my old modified WRXs, and it's also one of the smoothest riding cars I've owned. My SHO had the optional 20in wheels, and those would transmit every single bump, expansion gap and railroad track directly to the driver. The Entune system is well laid out, and the sound system isn't bad for a factory system. The heated seats are great, the control layout is simple and straightforward and there is plenty of storage in the front cabin.

At this point, while I find myself drooling over some of the builds that I've seen members on here doing, I think I'm going to keep it simple for the time being. A set of sliders (I'm leaning towards the Shrockworks with the treadplates) and a new set of tires (most likely 275/70/17 BFG A/T KO2s) should be the extent of the mods for now. I used to be huge into modifications, but it's also nice to be able to bring a car into the dealership and not have to explain anything. Time will tell, I'm sure.

(Cliffs Notes: I've had the truck for about a month and love it. Thanks for all the information!)

Glad you like it - it seems that most people who do their research and know what to expect are very happy with the 4Runner, myself included.

Best advice I've seen on the forum for new owners considering some mods is just to drive it for a few months and see what you're lacking for your uses. That being said, one month is plenty of time to realize that the tires need to go first!

yeah the oem tires after about 2 yrs, squeal like a stuck pig turning at any above average speed.

still have about 1/3 to 1/2 tread depth left, so holding out until maybe 6th gen info comes out for new tires.

I've found if I put in the research beforehand, I end up happier with the final product. Thanks to this forum, I knew that things like hearing a "squish" noise when I use the brakes is completely normal, it's going to nose dive a bit, if I want the truck to be faster I should have picked a different vehicle, 10k is perfectly ok for an oil change, and so many other things that might have been startling to me had I not done the reading beforehand.

I knew the tires were going to have to go before I even picked it up. I've always been a tire person, when my wife and I started dating I had multiple stacks of wheels/tires in my garage (rally wheels/tires, snow wheels/tires, track wheels/tires, etc) and didn't believe me that they were all for the same car sitting in the garage. Here in MN we see some fairly severe conditions at times and while 4WD works wonders, if you've got crap rubber then it doesn't matter. I've been looking at the N-Fab Nerf bars and the Shrockworks treadplate sliders, because while the truck is about the perfect height for me, it's not so much for my wife. I also understand that the two are different in purpose, but I tend to go for heavier duty items when I buy things and the Shrockworks seem to be a better choice for that. I'm still new to the offroading world, at least in the non-rally sense and so if I'm missing something I'm open for suggestions. Otherwise, I really can't think of anything that I want to change. I'm quickly understanding why these have such a loyal following.

Glad you like it and welcome to the club! What part of the Twin Cities are you normally in? I live and work around the 100/494 intersection and if are ever curious on how anything looks in person that I have on the truck would be willing to meet up, or for a trail ride etc.

Great to hear, I too am a new owner. Having mine a total of 6 days tomorrow. I looked for and contemplated for 8 to 10 months. I have owned a lot of Toyotas in the past, great reliability. Along with the Toyotas had a lot of Fords...

I test drove a 4Runner back in January, drove a total of 5 miles. That was all I needed. Knew what I wanted. So basically honed in on the Trail Premium, main reason I wanted the manual transfer case, the Crawl Control and MTS is an added bonus. In addition I wanted the navigation and leather seats. Would have settled for the SR5 Premium, but down here the SR5P 4x4 is harder to find than the TP. I am not kidding the ratio of 2WD's to 4WD's is 100:1 here in Louisiana.

I was looking for classic silver or magnetic gray, no options, nothing else. Did not want running boards, no glass break sensor, nothing else. This is very hard to find, as GS Toyota and the dealers load these things up with a lot of extras. My dealer found one in transit to a dealer, grabbed it in transit and had it diverted to him. Only option it had was the premium mats...I could live with that.

Regardless, I am very, very pleased with my new truck and I am sure you will be too.

awsome ShortytheFireman

Happy for you, I am also thinking of going with a trail premium, haven't pulled the trigger yet but am looking at prices and options. Does anyone know how the 2015 does with a supercharger on it?

Fresh owner here since Friday and I already agree with what OP has posted.

It is much more refined from what I used to drive, 2011 STi 5-door, and that of what my parents used to own, '00 T4R Limited, although I feel the engine could've used a 6-spd and the body rolls just a bit more than I am used to - this is a great vehicle and purchase.

Smiles all around from this guy.

Had my 2015 TEP for about 3 weeks and feel the same. Absolutely love it.

I searched, and this may be a stupid question, but will suspension modification void my warranty in any way? Have never purchased new and wonder about this.
