To buy another 3rd Gen. Foolish I know but I found an unbeatable deal on a 2000 Limited. It's sweet having a (non)functioning hood scoop and sagging tall coils that need to be replaced but it's hard to argue with a year newer, AWD mode, locking diff, and less miles. Are there any real reasons I shouldn't do this, besides my girlfriend's of "you should just be happy with what you have"?

Don't let a deal pass you by. If you got a decent deal on the 4runner you currently have, you shouldn't have much problem getting your money back. There's high demand for nice 3rd gens. Just make sure it's not too good to be true.

You have the key points. The differences 00+ are very noteworthy and not just something stupid like a new grill. Between that and the limited your GF might even enjoy the small jump in creature comforts and like it once your done with the haste of the swap. If you can do it without loading/spending more money it sounds like a win/win to me...

Do it! At least you didn't buy yours sight unseen lol. I told my girlfriend after I put the deposit on my 2000 lol.
 
I specifically sought out a 99 when I started my hunt about a year and a half ago.

Tallest ride height from factory, no traction control. To each his own....I would not let a sweet deal go either...in the past when I have...it eats at me! Best of luck and can't wait to see her.
 
My wife has learned to live with my automotive ADD. :o She also preferred my '97 (leather seats) to my '99 (cloth, but better cupholders, lol). She freaking HATES my FJ62.

I say do what makes you happy and unless your woman is paying the bill, then who cares what she says. But do keep in mind you may end up dumping extra money for registration and taxes, even if you get a fair deal on the 2000 and the sale of the old one.
 
Sweet deals for 3rd gen 4runners are harder to come by the older they get. I'd say go for it.

It sounds like the GF is worried about the OP possibly trading up for other things than just another 4runner.
 
I had the opportunity to buy a 2000 Limited locked 4x4 w/ 90,000 miles in great condition and I passed it up. For heaven's sake...DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE!!!
 
Don't pass up a good deal. life is to short to be saying "what if"
if it is a financially sound move for you then go do it.

Just passed up a 99 limited with 130k miles. why, because i have a wife!

Do it. I did the same thing. Don't let it pass and regret it. I loved my 97 auto..had all maintenance records and 157,000 orig miles. .. had it for about 6 months and sold it for my current 2000.

It's easy to get attached to these rigs. .. but hey, they don't have feelings and there's nothing wrong with replacing for something better. ... ssshhhh.. don't tell my 4runner I said that
 
I too have auto ADD...

Its just so hard to not want to grab up a good deal on an awesome truck...

I have regretted selling and not buying certain cars...

If you have an opportunity and the finances are there take it.

The GF will understand and if she's doesn't look for a trade-in opportunity on her... haha.

I could be wrong, but in 00 with the mulimode, I dont think it can have an elocker. Im thinking thats the locker for the center diff.

CDL came out in the 01's. On all 99-00 4runners there was an option for an e-locker, and was discontinued after 00 until 09.

It wouldn't be too much of a move financially. So if you're getting a better (and more rare) vehicle for $1000 +/-, then go for it. Have some fun!
 
Other than tax and registration fees it'll be an even swap, give or take. I just need to move mine fast before he realizes what a mistake he's making. Thanks for making the decision so easy, it's good to hear from people that are into 4runners just as much as I am.

The '99-'00 Limited 4wd 4Runner's have a multi-mode transfer case, which have a center differential. They could run unlocked for Full-Time 4WD capability. Often erroneously referred to on here as AWD.

They also had the rear diff locker (E-locker) available as an option.

The '99-'00 Limited's had arguably the most versatile 4wd system ever offered in a 3rd gen.

The only downside IMO, is that the Limited's were only available with automatic transmissions.
