After getting a new air filter from a shop.....

I did a valve cover gasket for a friend of mine. While I am there, I found lots of dust at the throttle body and the inside of the intake hose. I then opened the air filter box.
Take a look how they installed the air filter!

This is a VERY common issue if you let someone to install it for you.

I think the engine is trash.

A little dust shouldn't completely trash an engine. I've seen a Forklift engine (Toyota 4y) suck up about 3oz of aluminum shavings and it's still running 2000hrs later.
I did berate the customer a little bit.

That's a bold statement. What makes you say the engine is "trash" at this point? How is it malfunctioning?

You're kidding right? Drag racers run no filter all the time. Motor is fine.

I would think this would have caused a P0171 System Too Lean (Bank 1) pretty quickly due to the MAF sensor wires getting dirty and then causing the computer to think it needs to add more air causing the fuel mixture to be too lean.

I would have to agree with the other comments that the engine is not trash because of this. I'd just make sure I clean the MAF sensor and throttle body and call it a day.

Yes, drag racers want more power from the engine than anything else. For us, we want it to run without issues for years. This is in West TX, imagine the amount of dust and sand storms.

I'll not buy that truck, but down the road, the seller may say "serviced every 3000 miles"

Confession: ran a TRD oiled filter on my T4R for two years backwards by mistake, no dust or crap in the intake passage to speak of after but it was a tight seal in either direction :bolt:. The oil filter should have picked up most of it I would hope and I would just run synthetic and drive it till it drops. I would not right off the engine yet.

Clean it out. Clean maf. Change the oil. All those crap ebay cone filters don't catch anything and people run them all day. I have sucked in mud and water stalling motor out. That was years ago. Still running great. I ran open turbo many times on my DSM'S and never had an issue.

Installed back words, yes! Engine trash? Most likely no. I mean theoretically the filter is still there. So it was blocking shit. What got passed it was probably through the round part of the filter because it wasn't flush with the intake box. Flip the filter the right way and it a day.
