After LED swap - Temperature Gauge not working properly

I recently changed the LED's in my instrument cluster and now am having a problem with the Temperature gauge. I started the car with no needles on, turned it off and put all needles back in their place, but the Temp one has a mind of its own. I pushed the needle on at "C" and when i turned the car on it moves differently then the other needles. it looks like its stuck based on how it jitters but im unsure. Does anyone know whats going on here and how to fix it? i know a replacement motor is around $20 i just have to find it, but if its a simple solution id rather save the money.

I still have not been successful in trying to find a solution with this... hopefully bumping will help.

I changed the LEDs in my instrument cluster a few weeks back and the temperature gauge has not been working properly. it stutters up and down and no matter how many times I set it to "C", it continues to move randomly forward and backwards. I am looking at replacing the motor as I think it is bad.

I 100% caused it and ill admit it... I was playing with the needle like it was a helicopter propeller and probably blew up the motor.

Does anyone know where I can get the replacement motor and do it myself?

You might want to change the title of your post ( or start a new one) something like “after instrument cluster led swap temp gauge no longer working”.

That way sparky and yosh are more likely to look and respond.

Looking for this motor, searched both part numbers online and cannot seem to find anything, any help is appreciated this is the motor for the temp gauge.

The motors all look the same and have same part number 031027 06-103 but have different numbers for the number below “PPE+PS”, ending in B1 on this motor. They end on the fuel gauge as A2, speedometer is B2 and RPM is A1

Also scanned the QR code with no luck, wasn’t expecting anything as it is probably for the factory and never shared online but here it is for reference

Solution

I wanted to provide an update for this as I have found the solution. Hopefully if anyone else is having this trouble this post should help in the future. I have a 2004 4Runner Sport Edition and the temperature gauge stopped working properly after I did an LED replacement from the factory orange to white. The gauge was stuttering after I reassembled the cluster and I narrowed it down to the stepper motor that powers the needle. I discovered that the proper identification for the motor is "6S".

According to a lot of google searching, This motor was used by Toyota and Lexus from 2003-2013. It will work in any position – speedometer (mph), tachometer (rpm), fuel, or temperature. In order to replace it there may be some soldering required that I will write up how to do once I receive the motor.

A simple google search of "Toyota 6S Stepper Motor" will get you the motor you need. I found it as of December 2020 for $20, a fraction of the cost a dealership would charge. I found a shop that is charging $175 to fix the instrument cluster. My suggestion if your soldering skills are sub-par is to buy the part and take it to a shop that specialized in instrument cluster repair.

Another option is to buy a cheap instrument cluster on eBay, (I bought one for a Chrysler 300 for $40), and practice on that before doing the real deal.
