Aftermarket Axleshafts/CVs?

1998 4runner 150k miles, just purchased, both sides have boots that are broken. Been reading threads on here about just replacing the axleshafts since its a lot of labor just to do boot and they dont cost that much...so I spoke to my mechanic, and he said most of the ones you can get cheap are Chinese crap rebuilds, and it would be better to rebuild the stock Toyota axles.....I called a few dealers, getting "new" Toyota axleshafts are $200 each, my mechanic says they are probably really just rebuilt Toyota axleshafts which we could get done cheaper. I didnt know if $200 was at cost or I might be able to get them cheaper somewhere....or are there aftermarket axleshafts that are stronger (currently reading through threads on here and Yotatech trying to sort this question out) for a decent price?

I guess I dont mind getting my stock ones rebuilt, my mechanic knows his stuff and thinks thats the best bet. I guess its just time wise the turnaround being without the 4runner, and if I could buy something just as good and not have as much downtime it might be worth buying them (or the ones from dealer if I could find them cheaper?).

I also am sorting through the thread where guys have blown a ton of CVs...wow...some run through them, others go forever without issues...


Im a newbie here, first Toyota, just got it last Wed, trying to get it squared away so I can commute and wheel it, plus make it go for 300k miles I hope!!!

Any places to order good axleshafts for good prices Im all ears, or brands to consider or avoid.

Im in Los Angeles if there is anything local someone knows of.

I'm running a Napa CV with no problems so far, just a suggestion.

Give CVJ axles out of colorado a try. They have everything from rebuilt stock to built up ones for offroad

AES in San Diego will reboot them for $40 an axle out the door.

I would contact CJV Axels and see about getting custom cv's. Get the tundra cv's with the 4runner shaft length. The tundra has 6 bearings compared to the 4runner's 3

The tripod joint on the 4runner;s inner CV is actually a lot stronger than the ball and cage design on the tundra's and the outer 4runner CV. I would not recommend doing that.

Update for anyone reading this thread at any point...CVJ axles in Colorado seems the place to get some replacements....they do stock rebuilds option #1, #2 stock axleshafts with some improved CV boots to deal with greater angles from lift and #3 some hard core version for rock crawling...all fairly priced....and #1 and #2 are cheaper than stock axles from dealer by far...

I just dont have time right now but am probably gonna do option #2 from them if I dont get them rebuilt locally

We have not seen or heard of any new aftermarket axles that are as strong as the Original Toyota axles.
Remanufactured original Toyota axles are stronger than aftermarket and much less expensive than new Toyota.
We also offer remanufactured Toyota axles with upgraded inner boots and upgraded CVs - see #2 & #3 below.
Also, we can rebuild your axles if they are original Toyota.

1) We have standard Remanufactured axles in stock - CVJ part number 9168. Your cost is $84.00 each.

2) CVJ also offers an axle with a silicone inner boot for $129.00 each axle. This boot provides about 4% greater angle before the convolutions rub, plus silicone outperforms neoprene. This greatly helps with the number one axle complaint with lift kits - inner boot failure due to the higher angles. This is our latest design.

3) We also offer stronger axles for rock crawling, offroad and racing or $350.00 each. These upgrades address the second most frequent complaint - the CV breaking in addition to the inner boot.

4) We can address other problems as well.

All of above are Plus freight (UPS ground) which is about $18.00 each in the US, plus a core deposit of $50.00 each. (The core returned must be Original Equipment)
All of the above axles are completely Remanufactured by us using original equipment axles and only the best parts available. (Not weak Chinese aftermarket new axles)
Because of the many different kinds of lift kits, and uses, we do not warrant these axles. (Normal use CVJ axles have a limited lifetime warranty.)
