Aftermarket Cats

Just want to make it known that i am not talking about the animal.

Right now that we cleared that up, i'm looking for a high flow cat or even just a good stock replacement that doesn't cost a metric ton. A while back i hollowed out the stock cat because i think it was clogged and it made a pretty big difference in power and gave a few MPG bump. Now the extra volume is getting old and i'll need one next year for emissions anyway.

I know Magnaflow makes a couple different ones but after reading what COB went through, i'm not giving them any of my money. Anyone else know of a good manufacturer for catalytic convertors? It would be for the 96-98 single cat setup. A direct bolt on would be nice but i'm not opposed to getting a universal one and welding it up.

After my cat was stolen a few months ago, I ended up getting a Walker cat. It was about $175 plus muffler shop welding fee; California spec.; and I passed Calif emissions with outstanding results. Check out the Walker website to see if they have one compatible for your engine.:hatsoff:

I bought a bolt-up Walker cat (the front in a dual-system) and it was crap. There was slag hanging in the pipe, the welds were garbage, and the flanges were all wonky. I sent it back to Rock Auto - who, I might add, did a terrible job packaging it because it showed up with completely mangled AF sensor studs.

Seems to me like a complete roll of the dice, I'd go for the universal variety if I were you.


On another note, are you aware of the roadside auto-emission test stations scattered around the Denver metro? If you pass two of them (literally drive past and pass the test) within the 12 months prior to your required renewal, that'll count and you can get new tabs. No inspections... only problem is, it's like pulling teeth to find out if they passed/failed you.

Have you checked you local speed shops? They have tons of them starting at around $69 or so.

My magnablow cat actually does work, but the welds are ****ty. The heat shields fell off years ago. I won't be surprised if I have to replace it soon.

I am just surprised there aren't more "performance" brands producing Catalytic converters out there
