Aftermarket Front bumpers.

I've been searching through threads, as well as emailing company reps about front bumpers, but really havn't found the information I'm looking for. I'm looking for a comparison of the aftermarket front bumpers available to us. I had my heart set on a SW bumper, but after seeing some other options I'm back questioning myself, so I'm looking for your opinions.

Bumpers I'm comparing : Shrockworks, CBI, demello, Perkins Performance. (ARB and addicted offroac also make a fornt bumper, but I don't particularly like the look so I'm not including it in the list)

So far I know that CBI and Shrockworks use the thickest metal, while demello and parkins use thinner metal. How much of a difference does this make in terms of durability?

I also think the CBI looks sort of funny where it mounts to the body, unlike the other bumpers which seem to look better down there. However its 600 dollars cheaper than the SW, which is a big deal.

From a durability standpoint, they should all be about the same. Both Perkins and Demello are avid offroaders as well as fabricators so I'm confident that they would not design their bumpers without longevity and protection in mind. I've seen products from all of the manufacturers you listed above and I can tell you first hand that their craftsmanship is top notch.

Most bumpers utilize varying metal thickness depending on what needs to be reinforced (winch plate vs bumper wings) as well as additional gussets behind the plates.

There have been a couple of accidents that other members have had that I can remember; A10MileHusker (Perkins) and andyman32392 (Shrockworks). Both bumpers remained intact and was able to drive away with minimal damage.

Demello himself tested his 4th Gen front bumper on the trail prior to selling it to the public. Not to mention his FJ front bumpers have been trail tested for years with no reported failures.

I can only speak to Demello's bumper. It is super well made and very tough. and it is great looking. My wife loves her runner with it on. Now she wants it lifted to match the bumper. :thumb3:

Thanks for the pic rockdawg, that bumper looks really slick! Does anyone have a picture of the perkins bumper?
 
I love my shrockworks. They can do any combination of hoops or no hoops that you want. They come powdercoated black- but for $250, my local body shop painted it to match. I think it looks great.

i guess you are looking for a plate bumper. I Have had ARB and Shrockworks front bumper and one thing SW offers that ARB no longer does is the lower bumper skids and under covers, not to mention they are making better recovery points now that keep the shackles from driving you nuts. My vote is Shrockworks. unless you decide to go tube, then you need to check out my trucks both sporting Rocktek bumpers. you will notice in my sig i still had the SW on my black truck.

I talked with someone from the store and they said you can order the bumper and you pay when it ships ( approx 7 weeks )
520 for a wincher bumper sounds pretty good or too cheap?

Never heard of wincher before, and I've been looking around for a while, so I would be cautious.

The lower skid on the SW bumper is really what is making this a tougher choice for me, if it wasn't there I'd be sold on a demello. Also, why doesn't the perkins have the turn signals on the front, while both the SW and the demello do? I definetely like the aggressive look on the demello. I think at this point I'm deciding between DO and SW... then its to researching winches.

EDIT: also, does anyone know the different clearances offered by these bumpers?

Anyone know about the arrival angle differences between demello and SW bumpers?

Also, I know that the SW bottom skid matches pretty nicely with the full budbuilt skid setup. I want to know how well the budbuilt will match the demello incase I want to ditch the skids I made for budbuilt ones in the future, anyone who has done this?

Its my pride and joy pic (until I trail again :)). It looks like SW can have the same angles as Demello but SW offers the skirts to hide/protect the other stuff. SW Looks beefy but those skirts can be removed to increase those angles to match Demello.

Just something to think about....
I know they don't look nearly as good as the other brands, but ARB bumpers are the only ones with AIRBAG compatible (certified airbag compatible I believe) mounts. That is huge in my book. Suppose you get in an accident with a big clunky bumper and your air bags do not deploy, it could be catastrophic and could cause personal injury. The whole point of getting a bumper is for safety, protection and functionality and lastly maybe looks. Keep in mind I do like the looks of the other bumper companies better, but I think I'd still go with an ARB.


OR.... maybe I'm just stupid and they are all airbag certified!!!! :) my gut tells me no tho

your correct I believe. Only arb are certified. But the airbag deployment sensor is not in the bumper itself and should not be effected by changing the bumper. Seems like I had a discussion with Jason Demello before we bought our bumper from him and airbag deployment should still be active. just my 2 cents.
 
I think I'm going to go with demello, after having a conversation with a few of the companies, I like the look of their bumper the best, and trust the durability of it.

is there a problem with the winch angled down if you get stuck?
I do like the fact it is more protected though

I don't think there is any problem in fact if your climbing and have to use the winch it will have a better angle. IMHO.
