Aftermarket front rotors

Are Brembo, Baer, Wilwood or another "premium" brand of front rotors available for a 5th Gen, 4x4 4R ? I was curious of the price and if they bolt right on without any modifications.

I offer 360 drilled and slotted rotors on my site. They are USA machined and I have used them for my last two builds. Awesome rotors....awesome enough we started selling them.

I doubt Baer or Wilwood, maybe (maybe) Brembo. But you could always go directly to the source(s)... There are others like EBC and stuff

I know for a fact there is one premium brand that will bolt on without modification and are affordable... Toyota

Premium Dimpled and Slotted Brake Rotors

I run their premium slotted and dimpled rotors on my 08. I've also ran a set on a silverado I had a few years back. Seems like a good product and shipping is fast. I originally replaced brake pads and had the OEM rotors machined but they screwed up the rotors so I replaced them with these. I believe they carry calipers too.

No racing, just wanted a better quality rotor that doesn't warp like the OEM rotors.

My understanding is that these days most modern rotors are not only cast much thicker, but out of better quality materials and what most people call "warping" is actually vitrified pad material unevenly bonding with the rotor. But I haven't actually tested this out, this is just what a lot of guys in the brake industry pass off to me and such.

On a side note, are slotted or drilled rotors any better for off-road? I was thinking of going with some EBC pads and maybe rotors next brake job and wasn't sure if they were any better than traditional rotor designs?

45k miles and I haven't l seen that being a problem on my 5th gen and I tow over a pass a couple times a year. My 4th gen warped in 30k with just freeway driving but I haven't heard that was an issue with the 5th gen. Are lots of folks having issues?

I have 62000 miles on my 10' 4R, 4x4 and my rotors were cut in Feb 2013. I now have terrible pulsating from the front rotors, and I want to replace them.

To avoid "warped rotors" in the future, after slowing from high speed (like exiting the highway on a downhill ramp), don't come to a complete stop and hold the brakes in one place. Instead, creep forward slowly, or put in neutral on level ground and release the brakes.

Exactly! What most people describe as "warped rotors" are not actually warped, but have an uneven deposit of friction material on the surface.

I can't believe how long my brakes are lasting. I have 60,000 miles.

Towing my boat an average of once per week, almost every week(with no trailer brakes)- off roading at The Cove through mud and filth while dragging the brakes against hills and 4Lo for hours.

No warping, no pulses, still have pad left. Unbelievable to me.

I will go with stock Toyota pads/rotors for the life of this vehicle.

This. I went 66K on my 1st 5th gen and had plenty of pad left with no rotor problem. When you can get that life with a 4.6K vehicle that's impressive. OEM brake components for me.

The funny thing is, it's the cross drilled and/or slotted rotors that warp faster, lol.

Any time you cast/drill holes and slots into the face of the rotor, it weakens it's structure; and it also kills any chance for you to properly turn your rotors (ie. most cross drilled rotors specifically tell you they are non-machineable, and from my experience is absolutely true; I've turned a few sets in the past and they absolutely will crack afterwards).

If you're looking for a "premium" rotor in the sense that it uses premium cast iron and machined to exacting tolerances, factory Toyota rotors are about as "premium" as you're going to get.

To be honest, there's not much involved in making a chunk of cast iron...I've run everything from plain jane autozone rotors to brembo blanks and they all stop the same and hold heat the same. If you plan to trash rotors, get cheap ones; if not, pay a few bucks more and stick with OEM ones :)

You just had them done in 2013? That's from either improper bedding or the place you took them to be turned did a shitty job. The first time I turned them on my old 4runner the place did such a bad job I could see and feel where the cutter chattered.

Its quite possible that the rotors were cut improperly, it does happen a lot more than people would think. In fact Toyota is starting to shift dealers to using Pro-Cut's On-Car lathe due to inconsistencies that are created when cutting rotors off-car according to them (which is true, but can vary in severity based on condition of equipment, training, ect.) Particularly when customers return complaining about vibration/warping, though not all dealerships seem to have them (for example many of us still use our off-car lathes because we only have 1 Pro-Cut and we can't afford to wait in line so its only used on "warranty jobs".)

I also am starting to wonder about the material Toyota is using in their OEM pads, because as I stated earlier "warping" is typically vitrified pad material being unevenly deposited on the rotors. We also now have "affordable" Toyota pads (basically meant to compete with the cheap pads you can buy at AutoZone or Kragen's) that have been pretty problematic since their induction (they seem to be getting better, but I still recommend buying the "good" Toyota Pads vs. the cheap ones) with noise problems and in some cases they seem to wear far faster than I would expect (some of the pads you can see that there is a LOT of material removed to make production costs lower, looked at a 5th gen set we installed and about 15-20% of the pad was cut down on the sides compared to the factory "good" pads, it was quite shocking.)

I can confirm. I have 65k now and the brakes still have plenty of life. They are a non issue.

When I do replace them, it will be with OEM.

I'm running EBC's Ultra Slotted Rotors with EBC's Green Stuff pads all around. Feels pretty good.

Same here (Brake Performance), have the drilled rotors on my 4Runner, drilled/slotted on my Corvette, and drilled on my wife's Lexus. Never had a problem with them.
