Aftermarket headers

Hey guys I'm a newbie on the site but I've hadn't 4runner since 2006. I saw an old thread regarding a lack of aftermarket parts for the 05-09 v8 vvti motors.
I thought I could shed some light on my experiences and hopefully help with some solutions.
I also experienced the notorious cracked headers and after talking with dealerships I decided against a factory replacement and tried out sourcing after market headers. I tow every summer about 5000 pounds for about a 1500 mile round trip.. so I'd also like more power.
I found that the JBA headers made for the Tundra WILL fit with a few easy mods (as long as your handy with tools and a welder).
On the driver side, the forward most exhaust tube for the header needs to be cut right after the bend and replumbed over top of the other tubes. Additionally the tube needs to be dimpled inwards to clear the steering linkage. On the passenger side the only mid is tacking the oil dip stick to the header. At the same time I cut out the extra two cats. Why have four when you only need the first two!? A dyno test proved that the mod only gained me about 11hp, but my low end torque increased drastically by almost 30 pound feet!!!
The job took me a weekend and the headers cost about $500, but the improvements were well worth it.

So, the mystery regarding aftermarket headers are resolved. Get the JBA headers for the 4.7L tundra and modify them.
I'm typing on my IPhone so I don't have any pics to post this second, but I will add some ASAP, that way you can see how the mod looks.
Cheers!

I'd definitely like to see some pics of the modified headers. If it were a fairly easy modification, wouldn't JBA just make headers for the 4Runner in the first place?

Your right black4vcobra, JBA should be able to make these for the 4runner. The modifications are not very hard.
How so I add pics from my phone? Sorry I am new at this...

You can upload them to tinypic.com or imageshack from your phone and it'll give you the IMG code.

Re: Header pic's

Here are some pictures during the modification process of the JBA headers. Hopefully the attachments worked!

Sorry it took so long to get the pic's attached, I've been extremely busy.

Ticking Valves, and porting heads...

Hey guys, I know this thread is regarding the aftermarket headers that I posted about but I thought I could ask about another issue....

Has anyone had to rebuild their heads yet? The 2uzfe motor is an interference motor and the valves are a bucket and shim design. My valves are ticking during normal driving conditions, but they tick like crazy while towing our trailer.
Toyota techs up here are not the brightest bunch, the last thing I want is for a dealer to f**k with my ride.

Has anyone attempted to do this job themselves? Has anyone has any experience with removing the heads and having an aftermarket shop re-due the valves, springs, retainers, etc?

There is a company in Florida called ttc performance, but these guys design everything for a forced induction Supra application, not to mention they are WAY OVER CHARGING people.

I would love to have the vales and springs all re-done, as well as port the exhaust and bump up compression for increased low end torque... any thoughts?

Can you go into a little more detail about the drivers side manifold and what exactly you need to mod please?

What to modify on the headers

Hey Toyo,

The from header tube on the drivers side needs to be cut and run slightly higher and over the other tubes in order to create clearance from the engine bay, but in a way that still slows access to all of the bolts. It took some time and a lot tacking and measuring but the end result is awesome. Also, just before the same tube mates back to the collector, I had to dimple the tube in order to clear the steering shaft (very close figment). It sounds very muscular and made a huge difference in low end power. If you tow anything, this mod combined with full exhaust and an added tranny cooler, you can comfortably tow about 9000 pounds. However I believe in towing no more than 75% of what the manufacturer claims. This keeps my truck happy and my pocket book happy too; especially since it's over $1.54 per liter of fuel here in BC.

Hope my explanation helped a bit.

The second picture shows it best, unfortunately I do not have a pic from that angle before the mod as a direct comparison.

A shop with a good fabricated should be able to do the same job if you supply the headers, I doubt they would charge more than a couple of hours. It took me 4 hours, but I'm not a ticketed fabricator.
