Aftermarket Seat Heater Wiring Help

Need some help as I'm a bit stumped after 7 hours working on the truck today. I want to install some aftermarket seat heaters in the front seats. Specifically, I have the Crimestoppers HSK 150, if that matters. Got the heater into the passenger seat and everything back in place, but I appear to not be getting power to the seat heater.

Since I do not have a smoker's kit in my T4R and I was only working on the two front seats, I thought I would tap into the smoker's kit's cigarette lighter. I'll attach some pics to help.





When I opened up the center console, I saw an existing wire tap there on the accessory switch. I assumed this is likely for the power seats in my SE, but my accessory switch does NOT retain power when off, yet the power seats do. If this is not the power seats, then I do not know what the tap is for. According to the T4R's sticker (I bought it new in 2006), the "leather faced seats" were port installed by SE Toyota Distributors. As for the blue harness, I have 4WD, so that is for my DAC switch.

Any thoughts on what might be wrong with the cigarette lighter feed (I already checked the fuse - swapping it with the 10A for the tail light)? Also, any idea what this additional wire tap on the accessory output might be?

I read that thread and no, it doesn't answer his question. He is asking why he's not getting power from the spare cig lighter line in the center console.

OP, for what it's worth, I tapped that exact line in your first photo yesterday to power my electric seats and did not get power. I then tapped the main cigarette lighter line. But my main line is switched though, only works with ignition on.

Passenger Power Seat Tap

So I traced the wiring on the the "power outlet" 15A tap and it definitely is routing to the passenger seat wiring harness and appears to be the power seat. I checked the 15A fuse and sure enough, it was blown. Replaced the fuse and as soon as I put my voltmeter on the power outlet (orange and black/white) wire, the 15A fuse blew with the car off and key out! Got to go get some more fuses to do some more testing. My guess is the port reused the smoker kit's cigarette wiring to avoid running wire under the dash for the passenger seat and there is some relay somewhere for unswitched power. This is supposed to be on its own 30A fuse in the dash, but I am not putting money on that right now. There is a 5A fuse right at the passenger seat in the factory cutout in the carpeting. That is NOT blown.

At this point, I need to figure out if my taps (with the seat heaters turned OFF) are causing a short from the smoker's cigarette wire, or if I caused a short while installing the warmers into the passenger seat. Ugh, a simple project turned ugly.

The white wire that you are using as a ground has a black strip, correct? If not, it probably isn't a ground and that's where your problem is.

Bad splicing

Well, after practically ripping my hair out, I had given up and was undoing my work. It was then that I learned that I must suck at splicing wires. When I removed my splices and put in new fuses, everything behaved as expected and the "accessory" slot powered from the 15A fuse and the "cigarette" slot powered from the 10A fuse. The both only work when the car is switched to accessory, though my passenger seat works even when the car is switched off.

From there, I redid my splices and while not blowing any fuses, the passenger side seat heater wouldn't turn on. Ended up splicing again using some 14 guage wire I had and then twist tied and electrical taped that wire to the wiring from the seat heater. Voila, the passenger side now works. After all that, I didn't have time to do the driver's side, so that will happen another weekend.
