Aftermarket Speakers with stock headunit

I have the stock non-JBL sound system and I want to upgrade my speakers but want to keep the stock headunit.

I'm thinking about upgrading to Alpine Type R speakers but I want to keep the stock headunit.

I know for optimum results, I would need the aftermarket headunit to tune the speakers. But if I kept the stock one, will the sound of the upgraded speakers be noticeably different from the stock ones?

I just put Alpine Type-S components my T4R with stock non-JBL system and it sounds better, but not significantly so. I'd say about a 25% improvement. It's worth the money and hassle, but don't expect it to be crazy better.

I have my indoor non jpl system speakers upgraded I did it 4 years ago with pioneers and still have the stock headunit. I noticed a difference but not huge but def improvement. I also kept the 6x9 design in the front I did not use adapters to put in 6 1/2 as suggested but to get the 6x9 to fit I needed to shave the plastic around the speaker housing to fit the larger magnet so I can reapply the door plastic.

do the type-s, its a good factory upgrade. but i do recommend a new radio to help.

I replaced my stock 6x9's with these JBL GTO938's:

And did not have to shave any door panel's off to fit the bigger magnet. I just popped the stock 6x9s out of the bracket by pressing hard against the magnet while holding the bracket and the speaker pops out. The speaker is held to the bracket by glue. I didn't even have to drill new holes with the speakers I listed. Everything lined up perfectly. I soldered the new speakers wires to the brackets electrical plug clip so I could just plug the original connector straight in to the bracket connector and vwa la.

The upgrade was awesome. But the JBL system does have an amplifier. Not sure if the non jbl is just deck powered? Deck powered only gives marginal improvement with better speakers. Its all about the amp to make speakers sound up to their potential. I did a bad dynamat job on the outside door skin as you can see, but went nuts on the inside of the door as its much easier due to flatter surfaces with no wires and other obstructions. Dynamatting the outside panel and the backside of the inside panel made a big difference.

if you guys could do it over again, realizing it's only a marginal improvement, would you do it again? was it worth the time/money to upgrade for what seems like a minor improvement?

Yes, because I plan on adding a new headunit, amp, and sub down the road. The speakers were just the first step of the upgrade. Also, upgrading my non-JBL speakers got rid of a nasty buzz I was getting in the low-frequencies when turning the music up load.

I upgraded all the speakers in my 03 with the JBL system and kept the stock amp and hu, and the difference was night and day. I upgraded my stock speakers and HU in my 08 and it also was night and day. I refuse to use factory stereos, especially JBL

use a decent amp if want to use the type r. little bit more power goes a long way.
