Aftermarket Stereo

So, when looking for a new vehicle, I really liked the Sync Nav system that Ford had in their new line up of trucks. I ended up falling in love with the 4Runner but didn't want to spend the extra $7-8,000 for a Limited with Nav. Wondering if I purchased an aftermarket in dash system, would the steering wheel controls/i-pod connect/etc still work? has anyone done any aftermarket stereo research or had one installed? Just curious? Thanks!

I'm curious as well. Can the factory stereo even be replaced? It looks very integrated into the dash and does not seem like a standard din size.

Better Bass in my TE! Please! The stereo is good. I like it, I do! But, the stereo is the only thing that has me slightly missing my old Tribeca. I would love to upgrade the speakers first if it would truly give me an upgrade.

Info would be great! Is the non-Nav system in my TE already operating at maximum wattage?

According to my installer you can replace the stereo bezel, the new one comes with vents and you can fit a double din dvd there. You can add the wheel control and bluetooth adapters. This is the way I am going to go. I hate the stereo.

Its under installer.com, do a search under 2010 and scroll.. Its there. I was told you can preorder and it wont be available for a couple more months.

so i talked to a dealership parts/service dept about adding toyo nav to an SR5 after sale. good and bad news.

good news - it'll only cost $150 for installation including labor
bad news - the nav unit itself costs $4600 according to parts dept

i think i'll have to go w/ an aftermarket nav system like a pioneer z110BT which goes for $1500 including installation and all labor/parts

I talked with Car Toys about this. They can upgrade the stereo to a touchscreen using the dash kit above - I think Kenwood just came out with a touchscreen w/o Nav that runs around $550 (has XM/Sirius built in). They mentioned that doing this would render the blue tooth buttons on the steering wheel inoperable, but the touchscreen would have its own bluetooth functionality. Also, this would disable the USB port in the glove box, but the new unit would have its own cable for iPod connectivity. I think that stereo would be a much faster interface to the iPod than the stock stereo.

Or, you can upgrade your speakers only. However, there seemed to be some confusion as to the effect this would have on the "Party Mode" button. It could disable that. They threw out options for adding 2 amps instead of one to keep that function, but it didn't sound like they really knew what would happen.

Bottom line is you can upgrade, but you may affect other parts of the car. I'd be interested to see if anyone has actually tried any aftermarket installations.

I know in the past Eclispe units have plugged directly into Toyota wiring harnesses and you were still able to utilize most of the functions. I do not know if this is the case with the new 2010. Something to look into, prob worth it if you can keep the steering wheels controls. Who cares about the USB port, just replace the factory USB plug with the new USB plug.

Called Metra about this since I want to get an aftermarket nav installed and will need this part. They quoted me still another 30-90 days before this dash kit is available... unfortunately.

you guys had a chance to look at the kenwoods new dnx 9960 and 7160? those look pretty schweeeet i like the fact they run garmin gps and the 9960 has a completely 3d view

Love to see the DNX9960 in person. I don't think they are out yet. Price of $1899 scared me.

Mike from Metra quoted me 1-2 weeks before they start shipping out. I already went ahead and had my pioneer navi installed (surrounded by a big gaping hole due to the lack of dash kit) since I am impatient. I'm planning to paint the dash kit satin black, when I finally get it, in an effort to "black out" the interior a bit more.
