Aftermarket transfer case

Wondering if anyone has swapped /upgraded their transfer case for better crawl ratio? Was checking out Marlin Crawler and it seems they may have a solution. Any other options? Anyone done this yet?

My mallcrawler is going to eat the ebrake fast with the shitty stock transfer case.

I had a Marlin dual-case setup in my 2nd gen. Super-low was the bees knees in certain situations off road but I never used mega-low for anything except just goofing around. I liked to put it in mega-low 1st gear, then step out of the truck and do some activity (get a beer out of the back, shake someone's hand, etc.) and then casually get back in after it had moved a foot or whatever. People's eyes would bug out.

But why would you need a lower gear in a mall crawler and what the heck are you doing with your ebrake?
 
So I can safely climb on stairs and park benches to show off my flex

E brake slows you down and acts like a poor mans low gear when bouncing on rocks

If you do get a case set up I'd like to see it and hear about the install. I was digging into the cases last night since you asked and would go with the 4 speed case with the 10.something low it has the best range of jumps between gear options. If my Tacobox or FJ case end up causing a bunch of issues I'll end up with the 4 speed Atlas in my Tacoma.

I was going to call/discuss with Atlas Monday. Spoke with Marlin today... they said they are a few months out before they can even take an order. Based on their suspension timelines... I think it may end up taking over a year until I will be able to get a Marlin installed... will keep this post going if I end up ordering an Atlas

Yeah I had email notification for when the Tacobox came in stock and ordered right away and was still 8 months till I got it.

Spoke to AdvanceAdapters today. They haven't started playing with a 5th gen yet. They plan to shortly but could not give a timeline. Trying reach out to a few more places to see if they have the confidence to tackle this but I think I'm going to be waiting for Atlas to either do a test fit or the Tacobox (whichever comes first).
 
I would love to see a drop-in low range gearing for the TC. Like a 4:1 roughly.
In my opinion that would be ideal for most folks (obviously not the hardcore). Can't see why that would be so difficult.

It may not be easy to do. It could be very hard to engineer a planetary gear set with a different output ratio that still physically fits in the same spot, uses the same shifting etc. and also is a hunting gear set. But I agree. A 4 or 5:1 low range ratio transfer case planetary set would be really great for a lot of us. And be an easy swap.

Toyota has the solution in the parts bin. The 8 speed transmission would solve this. If you used the same overdrive net ratio (including diff ratio), you'd have the equivalent of 3.9:1 transfer case in 1st gear. If you had the 10AT - with the same overdrive ratio - 1st gear would be equivalent to our transmission with a 4.5:1 transfer case.

I'm surprised the taco box has such a long lead time. I thought Marlin was going to stock them.
 
Waiting for installers build sheet recommendation based on his Tacoma... but probably the 8:1

If you look at your options I'd definitely if it were me and spending the money I'd get the 1.0:1 / 2.72:1 / 3.80:1 / 10.34:1 then you actually get the benefits of a 4 speed case. A regular low range, a good lower low range and a good super low range the Marlin Tacobox gets a final low low of 12.08:1.

The other option is the one you're considering and really it's a 3 speed case 1.0:1 / 2.72:1 / 3.00:1 / 8.16:1. You're not really going to notice the difference between 2.72:1 and 3.00:1 which would be a waste. Remember when they talk about high horsepower and not recommending it for that use in the 10.34:1 case that's built high horsepower V8's that actually put some power down. Even a supercharged 4.0L I wouldn't worry about it.

If you do a 4 speed case you'll get to have a close to stock low range, a low range closer to what you had in your JK with the 3.8:1 and then super low as opposed to a close to stock and then a super low of twice what you had in the JK. That's a big span between selection. Cost is the same for the 8.16 and the 10.34. Difference is you'll get a useable low range of 3.8:1 in the 10.34:1 case as opposed to a little lower than stock and then a huge jump to 8.16 which you will most likely rarely use. Most of your wheeling will be in the 2.72:1 and the 3.8:1. with the 8.16:1 case you won't have that mid point. Not trying to tell you how to spend your money, but always try and help people get the most for their investment.

Ordered 10:1. Going to be completely redoing front suspension/steering/axles to add strength as well (upgraded rack and pinion, tie rods, RCV axles, knuckles...). Hopefully eliminating most of the weak spots. Expect build to start in 2-3 months so will bring more updates at that time.

Who do you have doing in the install of the Atlas? Atlas has been giving us grief for almost 3 months about ordering the 4 speed.

I'll be redoing my front suspension soon too, but that's a story for another day.
