Age issues

Hello all

I have an 03 Limited V8 4wd with 141,000 miles. I bought it in June from an Ohio Toyota dealer to have an inexpensive 4wd to last me a couple of years. They replaced the right front axle for me. I bought new tires to replace the dry rotted tires. I take it to my Toyota dealer this Tuesday to have the left door lock actuator, right front shock (X-REAS) and a few center dashboard bulbs replaced. They are also sending the radio/CD player away to be repaired. This week, I noticed a couple more issues. The gear shift is very sticky between drive and 4th and back. Shifting to and from other gears is fine. Also, when I cancel the cruise control, it will not resume to set speed. I have to hit the set again.


I just like everything in working order. I am just looking for thoughts/opinions on the shifter and cruise control. Thanks in advance!

What did they charge you for it?
 
A dealership is sending the radio off for repair?? How much is that going to cost?? I'd be hitting a junkyard or looking at aftermarket head units first.

What did they quote for the Xreas replacement? I'd bet you can swap out all 4 corners for some 5100s for less and be way ahead in ride quality.

I haven't heard of "sticky" shifter but I think there are a couple of threads about folks replacing some bushings to repair "sloppy" shifting.

Yep...do the bulbs yourself. Toyota was nice enough to make the center console really easy to remove and disassemble. YouTube is your friend or there are several threads on here.
 
It’s worth taking the center console apart and removing the assembly and giving it a good clean. Might be some 12yr old soda in the shifter assembly.
 
The shifter assembly is worn out, there's a spring loaded steel pin that follows a the plastic track/indents, the track is worn and causing the pin to get stuck trying to go over the high points of the track.

If you want it to work as new you will have to replace it with a new one, the part cost around $560+/-, or you maybe able to find one that isn't worn as bad at a savage yard saving you a couple of hundred or more $, I would recommend looking for one from a newer 4th Gen as it will not have as much wear on the track portion.

Or you could just live with it sticking if you never use 4th gear which most only use if towing to keep the transmission from automatically going from 5th to 4th too often and so the torque conventer can lock up correctly, if you do manually shift to 4th gear often it will only get worst over time to the point of the pin popping out of it's socket which then the shifter will be very loose and not wanting to stay in the selected gear and you can replace it then, if you decide not to replace it and not use 4th gear the other gear positions may get sticking with more age or not, usually it's going to 4th that most have issues with.

i have the radio out of my 06 limited (non JBL) that you can have for free. im in fayetteville, so not too far from you. everything on it works, i just swapped it out for a scion radio.

Thank you!! I might take you up on that. They are sending it away and I am not being charged. I can live without the radio for a couple of weeks. I will definitely keep you mind though, greatly appreciate it!
 
OP, let me know what they tell you. My gear shifter is pretty sticky too between D and 4th, but I never thought much of it other than giving it a bit more effort to push over.

I'd focus on the mechanical things first, and then worry about the rest later.
 
Seems like I remember reading here about one of you guys repairing that shifter deal with a little metal band clamp?

They did clean it out and greased it and I could barely tell the difference. They advised I will eventually need a new shifter assembly. They quoted me a price of $978. I advised I was going to hold off on that.
 
Hmm.. Was this a flood victim? All these problems seem excessive.
Forget the XREAS, have all four replaced with KYB,s.
Hope it all works out for you.
