Pls specify the model of your new radeon? If I remembered, the D865 is a 2003 model. and may not detect those new AGP video card..did you try the PCI slot? - just borrow a PCI card. ahh no video with PCI.. did you here beeps? When you turn on..no activity? like strange sound. How about the mobo batt. if its a 2003-2004 model, the batt could be dead by now. Try re-inserting the video card, clean the contact first with an eraser.

Since there's no display, just describe if you noticed unusual sound when you turn it on, how about the fan?

..also, there are 4 PCI slots in a D865PERL, atleast there should be one working. If you also have a PCI video card just do trial and error. I suspect its not the video card.

I'm sorry, I know this is not the right forum but I just want to help:)

EDIT: sorry didn't read completely that the mobo boots up. Like you said its a bad board and slots dead. If you scrap the board, you will be having a hard time looking for boards that supports your socket 478 processor and your RAM. There are Intel boards that has on board shared video and also has AGP and PCI slots, atleast you can still use your RAM and Processors.

865PERL

thanks. this mobo is a fav of many years. Radeon 850 256MB is 2 yrs old. No overclocking. Other PCI cards are audio and aNIC card. Good 12.4 VDC to cards. My Old Soc 7 PCI video didn't give me anything. strange now. good video and cable when tried on this laptop. New Asus AH3450 256MB AGP card is a newer XP/Vista model. any other ideas. thanks much!

You can probably buy a new or guaranteed good used 865PERL board on Ebay for a song. I just bought an 875 intel mobd brand new to replace a sick 865.

hey DR. an 865 fan. 800 bus? I went 2.4C on this with Mushkin MB. Ya, 2003 purchase. 3.0GB are cheap now.
OK, tried again with a new mobo 2032, old one was 3.1VDC.
no luck. Will try pulling all PCI cards and half the MB, running out of ideas now. can' t see tossing it yet. Ideas guys???

Have patience ,you might have missed something. Double check the monitor cable. If I remembered, that D865PERL can support an 800Mhz bus? and a P4 hyperthreading? If you are used to that set-up, like drmorbius said buy the same mobo..:) As for now, continue troubleshooting..simplify everything, pull-out extra RAM. disconnect other drives except the HD,
Did you hear beep codes??
4 beeps -timer not operational, 5 beeps - processor failure, 6 beeps memory failure, 11 beeps invalid BIOS. Since you are suspecting the Display card, The beep code is -one long tone followed by two short tones during POST if the video configuration fails. It indicates a faulty Display Card or Display card not detected. good luck LOL! I can't remember unless those stuffs are in front of me..

thanks for the beep codes. just tried a different LCD and NEW cable (DVI)--no luck. will pull half of my MB and 2 PCI cards (audio + NIC). fingers crossed.

latest: pulled out Muskin MB and both PCI cards--no luck. The 865 was 400/533/800 bus. I believe it was Intel's first 800 full time board. any other ideas??

ran,
How about the Power Supply? Swap with a known good PS. Or open the power supply and inspect for detached wirings. You can also trace the mobo in the AGP/PCI sections for leaking capacitors...sometimes a hair blower(warm) will do miracles LOL! ...

[/leaking caps!!?? I remember my
Abit BE6 slot 1 with leaking caps after hot-rodding that board. Actually, I replaced the PS this year with an Antec SmartPower 500 watt. Fluke Meter shows 12.3VDC at the card/cable. I have pulled all MB and cards, still no luck. I have pulled just about everything, maybe I'll pull the CPU next. keep those ideas coming guys, really need to get back on that machine for all my job links. thanks all]

Hey guys, forgot to mention. Last June I replaced the HD with a 320 Gb Seagate. I kept the 80GB WD as a copy/backup(by way of Acronis). Guess I am down to trying that next. I have built and rebuilt this machine since 2003. Cant believe it is not something obvious. thanks for the help guys. Will let you know how it turns out. Ran

On second thought, doubt it is the HD or mobo. Or does anyone think the motherboard can power up(fans and such) and still have a dead AGP slot? Keep in mind, there have been no error beeps. The PCI-video 8MB card was from my socket 7 days, could have been toast-but didn't work either. Both LCD test OK, but when connected they do not work. I tried different cables and even a new DVI cable. I have a D865GPF board, same family--Sata, Raid, P4/800 that had problems but may be OK to switch with. will sit on this idea for a while. Please keep those ideas coming. ran

Yes..If you'll disect the PCB board, you can see power lines sandwiched between. If it happened to be disconnected or don't have contact to the AGP slot then its dead while fans, CPU and BIOS are working..and AGP slots are always tortured as we always keep on changing video cards. Another is,If you turn on the computer and the card is not fully seated in the AGP connector, an electrical short may result across the AGP connector pins.
Now, how about if you transfer the HD to another computer make sure that the OS is running and shut down properly and reconnect it(HD) to the D865 through LAN, then connect the D865 computer to another computer and see if the other comp detects it(D865) now you will have visuals and can begin a precise troubleshooting, considering that everything is running except the display card and the AGP port.

Monday AM. Last nite I did try my WD HD that was the original HD on this board. Tried it with both Radeon cards--no luck. This other 865 board is questionable, may work. will probably try boot to WD HD. I left the cmos batt out over nite. !!!!!!!
It booted up, show cpu suffured a overheating. will pull and reseat the cpu HS/Fan. anything else????? maybe we are in luck today.!!!!! update later. ran

OK, error message was, cpu overheat something. I hit OK, entered BIOS, reset time/date. Save changes, reboot--nothing. somehow did the CPU "fry", not clocking at all. It did not boot to windows, just a black screen. Cpu or lost HD???? reseat H/S or just order another CPU. great. hehe. life

fun times now. After setup I get: reboot and selct proper boot device or insert Boot media in selected Boot Device.
I checked and Hd is first boot. In advanced/boot config, is Plug and Play O/S No or yes?? tried both. it was on No in setup.
multiple reboots, holding time/date and CPU is steady at 40c/105F. checked HD cables and power. ????

trying to get into windows. booted with win CD in place and hit repair--no luck. tried install--no luck. I pulled half the MB out and a nice Window screen said I deleted some of the memory. nice to know. hehe. anyway. I thought my 80GB backup would boot--no luck. strange. so now trying to figure that out. nice to know my original video card works. (nice to have a spare now). oh what fun these days. almost 55 yrs now.

tried to boot today, no luck, no error codes. tried differnent MB pairs. nexst time I will try my old 865 board, switch everything over. If I put HD in a exterior USB holder, what happens when another machine sees the XP OS in it?? More than likely it will be an XP or Vista machine. thanks all.

I don't understand..you are going to use a usb drive as boot device? It will boot as long as OS is installed. If you have 2 drives with OS, the default drive OS will let you select if you want the other OS in another drive to run...XP with the latest service pack installed can detect Vista..

So whats up? do you have display? can you see things in the monitor? as your initial problem is the display card.
