Aiden James Customs - Anyone heard from them lately?

If only the FAA and Boeing had the same relationship.
Actually, the problem there is quite similar to automotive safety, in that the industry self certifies that they meet the regulatory requirements. It is only during periodic compliance inspections or complaints that some of these issues come to light.

Newer technology, like MCAS, are no exception - the regulators must rely on the manufacturers to explain why it meets the regs and certify it as such.

Bringing it back to the car world - this is why it annoys me no end when some of these lighting manufacturers (it is almost always lighting manufacturers) tout that their lights are "DOT approved". DOT approves squat and it is the manufacturers that need to certify that their parts meet the regs.

And before you say "this is a US problem", you need to realize that this is the same exact way that regulatory enforcement works worldwide.

The US has some of the most dedicated people working at DOT/NHTSA/FAA, but the real subject matter experts must remain with the manufacturers and designers.

I know more about lighting and how the brain processes light than most (everyone?) here because I've been doing it far longer than I care to admit, but my knowledge pales when you look at the people who are doing the actual lighting designs for the major car companies.

The aftermarket lighting manufacturers have zero understanding of how lighting works and don't understand (or care) about the regs or the meaning behind the regs.

LOL this stuff is still going on? C'mon people. Learn. His stuff isn't even that good to where it's worth risking.

that's what I don't understand this either.

It's probably peeps who get conned from his FB group or OC overland groupies or IG, and then come to the forums to whine when they find out there money paid for an extended business loan they didn't agree too. Otherwise, this thread should serve as a warning to potential buyers.

and not only for this vendor but for other smaller vendors without a track record as well.

No way. How shady does that sound:
"The first 50 are in production now and are sold. The next batch of 50 will go into production in 4 weeks."

Send money now, production should BEGIN in a month(!), then an unspecified lead time after that. I have never dealt with the guy, only know that tons of people complain about stuff exactly like this for years, all the while he's on IG posing as the adventurer/innovator/all around great business person.

Heeeeellllllll no.

What I don't understand is why somebody hasn't complained to Toyota or the Feds.

I wonder how long it is gonna take before the complaints start rolling in

sounds like another loan request to his OC overland groupies.

At least if we look on the bright side, once the complaints start rolling in, this thread will never die......

Can someone please pass the gluten free popcorn?

So I'm the one who kinda revived this thread

Amazingly, I've finally received the bezels. He included a bunch of interior LEDs as well as a kind of apology.

Personally, I ordered despite this thread. I reached out to him before placing the order and he assured me that while the lead time was going to be 7-8 months that he was confident he would get all the orders filled in that time frame. That was April 2018.

He then ignored maybe 5 emails asking for a status update. Finally got some progress when I called his phone number. Still took an extra week for him to actually make and ship them after I established contact.

All told, its a really cool, really custom product that you can't really find anywhere else. I think he's a good guy who wants to fill all these orders, he just has been taking way too big of bites. He also seems to be a firm subscriber to the "squeakiest wheel gets the grease" motto. For months I was very polite, stating I understood the backlog and just wanted an update. It wasn't until I started threatening fraud lawsuits that I finally got a response. So if you are SUPER interested in his products, I'd say its a fair bet you'll get them eventually: you'll just have to be a dick about it.

Gotta pay for that business trip to FJ Summit somehow...

Guess he or one of his devotees is reading the forums...

First video and a little AJC history lesson...
-
The first thing that I (Scott) made even before AJC was named are these custom DRL bezels. Owning a 15 4Runner at the time I felt it was missing something up front so created a kit that I started selling on Craig’s List and eBay which became very popular. I then sought out to offer lighting upgrades to go with the bezel kits which again became highly popular. Come January 17, 2015, I launched the first AJC website. Then while being a tech for Toyota I started doing other work on 4Runners I’ve the next few years. Fast forward to April of 2018, AJC was getting too busy for me to handle my day job at Toyota and AJC so my family and I made the leap and I became full time to AJC.

No back to the bezel kits. I have been getting asked a lot when they will be rereleased and well, here they are, rereleased. After investing thousands of dollars in a company to build them for me to ultimately reduce lead time, they are finally in production. The first batch of 50 are being built now and are spoken for. We are selling the second batch of 50 now (many are already spoken for) and once we (AJC and the company building them for us) can determine the demand for each version, we will build larger lots of them and keep them in stock. We have a good idea of which version is the most popular but are taking a calculated approach to ensure we have the right version being focused on.
-
The three versions are: switchback - white with ignition on and blinks amber (shown in this video. White only - white with ignition on. Amber only - amber with ignition on.
-
How easy are they to install you ask, took me 20 minutes in camp this morning to swap out the prior version to the new version with only a 10mm box wrench and a knife to cut the zip ties.
-
Link to them in our site in the video above. Click on it.

The custom bezels (should) indicate that this process is more streamlined. However the comment about waiting to gauge interest on each type to stock is a red flag. I would use a universal harness that the end user could configure on their own. The switch back could be omitted by not hooking up one wire. I believe that you can use constant Amber or constant white by changing two wires... no need to stock three versions. They are all the same thing and use the same harness/ light tube. Or at least I am assuming this.

I am making my own set using white led tubes from super bright LEDs. My total cost is around 100 dollars for everything.
