Air cleaner

If I want to add a high performance Air Cleaner would you recommend the TRD or K&N? are there other ones that might be better? would you also add the tornado air unit? I know a deck plate mod would help has well but I drive in dust a lot and am concerned about the dust getting inside of the engine. Thanks for the help

I would Not reccomend either one especially if you drive in high dust areas-- but if you must have one , AMSOIL Filter would be the best way to go--- I Personally have the TRD filter-- but I don 't drive in very dusty areas--I have read that test shows AMSOIL filters have the best Filtration of the three...K&N and TRD are pretty much similar design... Here is a comparison chart-- judge for yourself...

I looked up the inforamtion on the AMSOil air filter, to fit my 4R is $32.30 for the AMSoil. If this is the best filter why is it so cheap? I looked over their information on the product and it does look like it out performs all other filters. But why is it cheaper than a K&N or TRD filter?

:dunno: I can't tell you exactly why the AMSOIL filter is much cheaper but I believe you are basically paying for the brand name for the other two... This all just has to do with marketing... As you have found out AMSOIL has proven best results-- If you research other forums like Yotatech & Tacoma Territory you'll find out that the majority of the well knowledgable enthusiasts there use the AMSOIL filter and will tell you to do the same especially in your type of driving environment... SO it's really up to you to decide if you want to spend more on less protection from the TRD & K&N filters...

Thanks, I just ordered the AMSOIL filter. I have used K&N on my Blazer, however I noticed no differance in performance or fuel usage. Thanks for the info.

Where did you order the air filter from? Also did you order just the Amsoil or the new Amsoil Flowzair?

www.AMSOIL.com online store, This is the only filter that they offer at this time according to the website. I understand that the flowzsair refers to the process of the filter and not the filter itself.

I have been running a K&N in my 4runner for about 70K miles now and before that for over 100k in my tacoma. They work well for filtering but I never noticed any performance or gas mileage increase. It's nice to keep the filter forever with just routine cleaning. I hear stories about dust slipping past and covering the air box, and thus entering the engine. I drive in Maine on logging roads often and have never had dust blow by the filter, its always nice and clean on the engine side and dusty on the intake side. Some guys with tacomas put a bead of vaseline around the filter to stop any dust from slipping by, I don't because it has never been an issue. I won't do the deck plate mod, I like the elbow but I have heard those throttle body spacers make a difference, never tried one myself seems to easy to be much use.
