I bought my K&N filter new it came oiled, I never oiled it, came out of the box and into my truck. if you want to replace your filter go with AFE part number 31-10026. this is a direct replacement for the factory paper filter except better no oil and flows better. they also make cone filters to replace anyone else s filters you might have. K&N have had a lot of claim's against them with there oiled filters. ever sence manufactures started using MFA' mid 90's to present. MY second vehicle is a 2007 mazda speed 6. I have been upgrading that too; on all the forms everyone say's to stay away from K&N and anything else that is oiled specifically for the reason I stated above in my first post. K&N has the NAME , that being they were one of the first to make after market filters , time's have changed and they have not. the new way is dry flow synthetic filters! That being said Volant power core is the best, flows the best, cleans the best and is impervious to water (great for anyone who goes off road) second AFE ,CPE and injen. Also, the cold air intake filter that comes from the factory on my mazda speed 6 is dry flow! also all 4runners come from the factory dry flow (paper filter)

mmmm power core... i love mine! i thought you didn't need to clean it for the 1st 100k? it is a funky little thing, for the price, it looks way cheap from the outside but then you look in it and see where all the magic happens!

I know it's a late post, but I had to add my $0.02. It's all about personal preference. I run K&N on both my cars. I've had them in for 110k on the Acura and about 3k on the 4Runner. Plus 70k each on a '03 Mazda6 and '00 Honda Prelude. They are good filters and I have never had a problem. You just need to take the time to clean and oil them properly. These filters are not letting anything large enough into the engine that is going to damage it. I get slightly better gas mileage on the Acura (~1mpg) using it, not sure about the runner since I dropped it in day 1.

I would defiantly stay away from anything that is oiled!!!!!!!!! also go with a sealed box. That being said if you want to save some money and still want some performance and can sacrifice some looks then do this. keep your stock air filter box- get a dry flow filter from AFE part #
( 80295931028 ) for 46.76. this filter is a direct replacement for the factory drop in paper filter then do the deck plate mod and air elbow mod. deck plate mod 12.00 dollars give or take. then get rid of the intake silencer and either buy or make a tube to connect filter box to throttle body. if you choose to buy look at Airaid JR. usually about 100.00 bucks. 158.76 total. Or you could buy the volant and just replace there oiled filter with a AFE dry flow that would cost a lot more probably 300 give or take. but would look great! don't know if it would produce more or less power than all the mods listed above combined. The cheapest would be to buy one of the 40.00 dollar cold air intake kits off e-bay and put a AFE filter on it. this would be around 80.00 dollars give or take. problems with this is no brand name except filter and its a open filter. and quality of kit could be questionable the last thing you would want is a piece of chrome or paint to flake off and get sucked into your engine. these are the best options I have come up with.

Kool Blue filter anyone? Going on 20K with mine, cleaned it after 18,000 miles. Didn't have some special cleaning kit so I washed it then used brake cleaner to get the grease out.....any reason I should get a different filter?

I am running the Kool Blue as well. Had it in since spring. I just took apart practically my entire intake for a variety of reasons, namely throttle body cleaning, "D ring" mod, and MAF sensor cleaning. I did not notice even the slightest hint of oil contamination or dirt upstream of the filter. I would have to give thumbs up to the Kool Blue. Especially for $20 + shipping.
I really didn't buy it for any performance increase, just to save $$ on $28 paper filters.

Lets get one thing straight, our trucks require MAF cleaning every once and a while right? That is WITH an OE filter not any other kind of filter and OE is the best for filtration qualities not for performance. Now, lets throw in a K&N on a pre 99 it won't matter much because it has the older style vortex MAF so it'll still be happy. Put a K&N in on a 99+ with a Hot wire MAF and you're going to be cleaning that MAF more often even with a PRE-oiled filter you're still going to get oil particles on the wires of the MAF which will give it false readings and thus poorer fuel economy and maybe a CEL. I didn't make this shit up, I do NOT recommend these filters to my customers unless it's a dry element whether it's stock/Aftermarket performance.
