Air filter placement

On my last truck, I had to replace the air filter once a year. It would come out pretty dirty with grass and bugs stuck in the pleats...let alone the dirt due to my location and an annual 2500 mile road trip. The truck sucked air in from behind the DS headlight.

Its been about a year since I've had this truck (dealer changed it before purchase) and as I have just changed the oil and rotated the tires, I thought do the air filter as well. Popped off the clips (I LIKE this!) and pulled the filter. It is VERY clean compared to what I'm used to! Popped it back in and good to go. Read in the manual filter replacement is 36 month/30k!

I'm glad Toyota engineers chose this location. Less maintenance/cost and I have two filters in my home-Toyota parts stash. As I drive way less than 12k a year and will go by time, the next time I have to buy an air filter could be 2022!:becky:

I have the V6 but I have to agree. I'm on my second 4.0 V6, and I have had the same K&N drop in filter in both of them. When I traded my 03 in for my 08, I pulled the K&N and couldn't believe how clean it was after like 4-5 years of constant driving. I cleaned it anyway and reoiled it, but I haven't even given it a second thought in the last 2 years since I installed it. Definitely a good setup like you mentioned.
