Air Filter

So, i went to get an oil change this weekend, and they said that the airfilter was dirty. In fact it is, what do you think (besides k&N) is a good filter. Or in fact if K&N is the best filter, where should i get it.

Any help is appreciated.

I'd stick with the OEM. Someone got their truck on a dyno and then swapped a K&N and it made no difference. If Trueflow made filters for the V6, I'd say go with them but alas they only make it for the V8.

I'll be sticking with my OEM for a while as I have prepaid maintenance and part of it is replacement of the filters (air and cabin).
 
Although I believe that K&N doesn't give me more power. .. I do believe that I bought one for the life of the car.
 
I think K&N is basically lifetime, as long as you do regular cleanings.

I use the OEM filter myself.
 
Some places the soap and oil comes with it. You can also buy some more in a separate kit. I had it on my old celica and it was kind of a pain to have to wash the filter, wait for it to dry, oil it and then install it. If you don't have an extra car or filter, then you're stuck without a car.

That's why I like the OEM filter, just pop out the old one, pop in the new one and you're good to go. I remember you mentioned you were on a lease too, so I don't know if you'd want to pay the extra costs for the filter if you don't plan on keeping the truck.
 
AHHHHHHHHH your memory serves you right. BUt i must admit, there is no way i am going to get a different kind of truck. as far as i am concerned this is it for me.

But to tell you the truth, i am kinda interested in the new one coming out in 07. I think it is the cj4 but not sure. Since it is using the same 4 liter engine, do you think that it would fit, or is a diff engine all together
 
You mean the FJ Cruiser? That uses the same V6 engine in our trucks. I'm pretty sure it is the same 1GRFE engine. I'm not a fan of the looks and I'm happy with my 4Runner. I don't take the 4Runner offroad enough to justify the FJ Cruiser.
 
Good point. Will the FJ cruiser basically be almost totally set-up for offroading use.

I did see that they are going to have a manual transmission in it though.

The fj will be set up for off-road but the chassis is the same as the 4Runner so on-rode ride quality should be the same.

Things that set the fj apart from the 4Runner are:

Rear locker
More room in the wheel wells for articulation and bigger tires
approach and departure angles
real skid plates
available OEM sliders

Other stuff but not really making it more off-road worthy:

Manual tranny.
inexpensive or at least a great value for a very capable 4wd vehicle.
 
but wouldn't you want a manual transmission for more torque at lower rpms. Wouldn't it make it better for offraoding use

It's debatable and varies depending on the type of off roading. For instance I believe an AT is prefered for rock crawling.
 
I'll get a K&N when it's my turn to get a new filter for the 4R.
I had one in my jeep for 7 years. Easy to clean in your bathtub, and you don't really have to dry it off completely. Shake out the excess water, spray oil on it. Just get the engine nice and warm, then put the filter on it. The moisture in the filter will never see its way into the engine, it'll burn up way before then. Not a big deal.

No noticable HP change, that seems to be all BS... but for $40 and a lifetime guarantee and it's washable, you can't go wrong, in my opinion.
 
I have the TRD drop-in, which I think is made better then the K&N. Better material quality and a better fit. The fit is REALLY important; I have had issues with K&N in the past with other applications. A member on this site has had an UOA which showed the K&N was doing a good job at keeping out debris. I guess depending on the application the fit may vary, or quality control may be the problem. Time will tell when more member get UOAs. I'm due for my first UOA in a couple months, so we will see how the TRD does. If I was thinking about a replacement now I would wait for the new nano-tech filter from Amsoil. If you are leasing use the OEM filter, they do a great job and cost less. The only reason I went with an aftermarket is I wanted a lifetime filter, I plan on keeping the 4Runner for many years.
