So I drained and filled the PSF on my 2018 for the first time (67k miles).
Should have been super easy by jacking up front end with tires barely off the ground, plugging the return intake, putting return drain line into a container, then moving steering wheel side to side with key in the on position.
What I did not expect was the staining on the plastic PSF reservoir making it look fuller than it was, causing me to drain too much and get air in the system. Drove around the block once as the issue became clear with whine and intermittent power steering loss; hope I didn’t damage the pump.
Drained again and added a 2nd 12oz container of Idemitsu making sure not to get any more air in. Improved the steering back to normal but still with some whine. I only had 2 containers. Ordered 3 more containers planning to drain/fill again until the whine is hopefully gone before driving it again.
Any advice? Did I damage the pump by driving around the block with air in the system? Next time I’ll know to go slower with the drainage to prevent air in the system.
Learned something today. Just hoping it wasn't learned the very hard way.
