Just wondering if anyone has had issues with their air intake pump? I bought a 2005 limited cheap last month. Has 100k miles, started noticing a loud noise when I'd start it up in the morning. Last Friday I noticed the noise was gone and the CEL light came on as well as the VSC Trac off light. Started to drive it and quickly realized the computer was in limp home mode. Took it to a friends' shop, threw the scanner on it, and it's showing a P2445 and a C1202. Looks like the air intake pump under the manifold is dead. Looks like it's going to cost around $1500 to fix. Anyone else have this problem?

2005 V8's and On have it. Not sure about the V6.
In my "research" to buy the 4th gen, I made sure to take a look at all the really large issues. This isn't one. In fact, this is the first I have heard of it. It may be an issue for the Tundra folks, but it doesn't appear to be a large issue with us.

It appears to be just for emissions, meaning you can drive without it. You truck driving in limp mode won't hurt it. So, that means you can tinker with a few solutions before you decide to spend 4k.
I say you do what the tundra fellow did. Pull that bad boy off and see if you can get it working. Who knows.. a large pebble or some other thing could have just gotten in there and stuck it. Pop it off, clean it out with some forced air... check the connections.
Also... wtf about this is WORTH 4k????? Thats a new engine. Geesh. Ripoff. Its a fan....

well the 4k is for the replacement of both the pump and valve from what i understand. pretty lame.
i heard that if you are in California it should be covered under the emissions law. again this this is what i have been hearing from the other tundra guys

Only if you're still in the warranty period (or toyota extends the warranty when it comes to certain TSBs.)
The reason the Tundra's have it so bad is because of a poorly designed air intake for that pump. Water gets inside, ruins the pump, and the pump sends it out to the valves which get rusty and corroded and stick.
The redesigned setup for the Tundra's are 2 new valves (either 4.7 or 5.7), new pump, and a modified intake tube. If you catch it within the warranty period, super, if not, $$$.
The 4R's do not share this same issue.

So we have those pumps/valves on our 4.7L 4Runners? They just aren't prone to issues if/when getting wet?
If so, I wonder how the systems are different.
Are those pumps in the passenger side 'air intake' fender?
I bet that Blackworks guy knows...

I believe that only the '05+ VVT-i motors have them. I know the valves are under the upper intake like the 08+ 5.7L's. I believe the pump is in the valley on ours, and in the fenderwell for the Tundra, but I could confirm at work tomorrow.
As far as why ours may last longer, again, it's the way the Tundra ones happen to catch water bringing more than intended, unlike ours which has a better ait intake which prevents less water from getting into the pump. That's why they redesigned the Tundra air pump intake and extended the warranty on them. We've seen A LOT at my dealer.

I was right about the air pump, right in the valley of the intake manifold.
No service bulletins on the system for 05-09 either.

I hope someone figures out how to spoof the inputs to the ECU (at least at start-up warm-up time)

I am curious about that. If it isn't a sensor, and it is just operated at start up.... I bet it is a simple continuity connection and the ECU simply cycles that plug hot/cold based on a set time frame.
You may simply be able to simply short it, and that might trick the ECU into thinking it is there.

My 2008 had this problem around the 15k mile mark, before I bought it. Here's the text from the three service records:

Man it sucks that the dealers and manufactuers get away with charging so much for a part... its just not worth THAT much money. Its an pulse width modulated air pump, a little better built than a blower motor...
