Air pump question, before I break something

How do you remove the piece pointed to in the picture? Im trying to swap out the filter but im mechanically retarded. Thanks! And feel free to make fun [emoji3]

Unscrew the screw that holds the assembly (center of the top, blocked by your hand), then yank it off once you have it off the pump. Worked for me.
 
Disregard, just pulling up the tabs released it. I had no filter left, however.

You need to take the top off. That's where the foam is.


I removed that center screw. It was still snug on there. I pulled but it seems like much more and something will give that shouldn't. What am I missing? Do I need to remove the other screws around the base of the pump too?
I appreciate the help!
 
You only need to take the single screw out. There is a gasket that joins the halves of the housing. It may just have a snug fit.

I believe this is also called the air injection pump used for reducing carbon emissions (I think).

Anyhow, there is a foam filter in there and from what I remember reading somewhere, it eventually breakdowns and pieces of it can get sucked into the system.

what is this air pump used for?
