Got my Secondary Air Injection INJECTION!!

I have just experienced the dreaded Secondary Air Injection Pump failure at 111,000 miles on my 2006 V8 4Runner. The dealer is quoting $2300 to fix the problem and no help from Toyota Customer Service or Toyota Customer Experience folks.

I will save my receipt and hope Toyota man's up and take responsibility for the V8 4Runner owners. I am posting on social media explaining my experience as hoping to add to the growing pressure.
 
I know it's an old thread, but I just had this pop up today. Had the P1445, but no associated harsh starts, and the car is running fine. The most troubling thing is the C1201 code that accompanied it. Wondering if anyone has had the same code pop up on theirs as well. It's a 2005 V8 $wd for reference sake.

I am having p 1445 p2441 and p 1442. I have seen forums and issues like this and am getting extrememly depressed. I love this new 4Runner but I can't even begin to state how frustrating this is. I will have a lawyer write a letter to toyota even if it goes no where. This is disperate treatment. The SAME ENGINES with the SAME issues are getting covered under a 150k warranty? BS toyota...no way out of this one. Get everyone and anyone who has had this problem together and and possibly a class action lawsuit?

This is absolutely proposterous.

I need input. Has anyone used the secondary bypass system that others have noted to pass emissions? I can't get my car passed safety and emissions--which means i can't register it. It's a whole chicken before the egg thing.

If the bypass works, is it a short term fix, or do i leave as is for the remaining life of the motor? The preivous owner has had it in this condition for 2 or more years and says it has run fine. Is there really any performance issues? From what i read there is not.

Please let me know on the bypass as I would rather not spend 2-3k to get my car registered--anger doesn't begin to express my feelings. I can buy a new SBC crate for that....WTF!!!!!!!
 
There a few people selling workarounds. I bought the little block off plates and a "kit" $70 or so included relay and a resister and where to put it. Install took 10 minutes and been fine for 3 years. This is not a big issue just search, read, and fix it guys.

Now if anyone can fix my sunroof for under $1000 I'll be impressed.

Again, I have read. I've read about 5 forums worth of data, talked to Toyota. I asked for opinions and examples of what worked. Forgive me, but I've seen literally HUNDREDS of people who had this problem and DID NOT find a workaround....so I'd rather not be one of the "oh I wish I had tried...."

Can you link where you bought your workaround?

As an update, I talked to Toyota and got the same load of BS everyone else got. My case number is 1507071580. The toyota client experience representative was quite helpful. He clearly had 0 ammo on what to say. He mentioned multiple times that it is a completely different car (reffering to the sequoia and tundra's with the same issues under ext. warr.) ...and when i replied but the engine is the same...he agreed...only to 2 mins later say "They are completely different engines." So needless to say I got the address for sending legal correspondence and said I have a group of hundreds with the same issue. I'm going to make a stink anywhere and everywhere I can ...even if it means nothing. This is piss poor relationship managment and as many have said...this is my 3rd toyo product and I would buy more (mentioned this to they guy on the phone)...and his response was that the toyo i bought didn't go to the dealer enough to prove that it was a loyalty issue.....lol. Anyway I thanked him and moved on to the lawyer. Again, things will not nec. change today or tomorrow...but some of the guys/gals who wasted 3k due to piss poor communication and a part that could literally not have been saved with preventative maint. should be reimbursed!


Any and all workarounds for the issue--please LINK the site and give me your experience. Thanks for the reply!

Just read through this thread for the first time and I am noticing the majority of 4Runners on here that have the air pump problem are 2005 with a few 2006 and one 2007. I have two 2004s both with V8 and neither have had the problem. So are 2003 and 2004 in the clear with this? I know Toyota went to VVT-i for the V8 in 2005 so maybe that has something to do with it.
 
P1445 Question

I have also just experienced the dreaded P1445 code, I think it said ("Secondary Air Injection Pump failure") at 155,000 miles on my 2005 V8 4Runner. Any updates on this on a work around? Also more importantly can I still drive my car for a little bit until I figure out what to do? I don't want to cause more damage and lead to more $$$. I also have to tow my boat in to get it winterized in a few days. Should I be OK to continue to drive it until I figure something out? Thanks!

I also had p2441, p1442 and p1445 codes when I purchased it and was pretty horrified when I started reading up on it. Luckily I found something the next day, right before ordering parts from the dealer and looking to have someone do the labor for me. An engineer who I believe owns a Tundra or one of the Toyota v8 vehicle made a bypass module and exhaust block off plates related !! I ordered one, installed it and it Worked!! Cleared the codes, been about a week now and all good!!

It was around $155, I just wanted to share as this saved me thousands and could make others here happy too! Here is a link to it.

I ordered one through his ebay... I installed it myself. Pretty straight forward but more like a 2.5-3 hour install for me taking my time with the wiring.
Taking off the front wheels to do the exhaust block plates was the way to go. Maybe tundras have more room to do it without going through the fender wells but on the 4runner it was way easier that way. Hopefully it helps others!

I am new here but thought I would chime in as I am looking for a workaround on my 4runner. Just like everyone else I love the vehicle, it's amazing. But I am FORCED to drive around with a Christmas tree of lights on at all times. I have code P1445 and was quoted $2500 to fix at my local Toy shop. I would love to hear if anyone has a workaround on this. I don't know if I will be able to use this vehicle in any other state other than the one I am in now which doesn't check emissions.
 
yeah you need a bypass.

The bypass will fix your issues and remove the lights.
MANY people use the bypasses in emission states. It will not effect your test results and the testers will not know it is there. Hope that helps.

I declined the repair due to cost and can't believe that there is not another work around other than taking the engine apart and replacing these parts... and they (toyota dealership) can't promise this will fix the problem. Need to figure out some way to get the computer to stop responding to those codes. Any ideas???
