Air Switching Valve

Add me to the list, sigh. 05 V8 Sport just went over 100k miles. First got all 3 lights and Toyota said water got into the pump. Reset the codes, stayed off for a week then came back then a few days later turned back off on their own. About a week later the check engine light came on by itself, had it checked and came back as the air pump not functioning. Haven't had any noticeable issues or noise. Getting quoted around $2300 to fix. Thankfully just had emissions done but I was starting to look at selling it or trading it in on a new runner or sequoia so now its going to make that harder to deal with. Did call Toyota's CS on the case opened for this but they didn't say much. Pretty lame so I doubt I'll be getting another Toyota.
I'm in the P1441 error code club... I have ~113k miles and the CEL and others came on. Autozone confirmed a P1441 code. I'm just learning about this, what is current news from Toyota about this issue? Is there a fix posted I'm missing? Thanks.

go haggle with your toyota SA and leave a post on the toyota facebook page like I did.Here is my response from Toyota concerning this issue. They are not going to do a damn thing for the 4Runner guys...

2005 4Runner, 4.7L, 4WD. 90k miles. Same symptoms. Cold starts with a rough "whirring" sound then one day the CEL and traction lights light up and the vehicle will barely make it to 30mph.
Dealership runs codes and tells me the air pump is faulty and the valves (3 of them) will need replacing. Original estimate of ~$3,900.
Could not find after market pump or valves and my Haynes manual stated this is a complex procedure. So I went with dealership.
While at dealership I called Toyota and filed a complaint. Spent 45 minutes telling them it was the air pump and couldn't understand why some Sequoias and Tundras got extensions but 4Runners didn't. Was told they'd get back to me next day. Two days later I've not been contacted.
Final bill was $3,200. ($2,300 is for parts. $1,300 for pump, close to $1,000 for three (3) valve assemblies).
I obtained the faulty part and the blades on the impeller are constructed of a cheap plastic that over time became brittle, broke off and the pieces got stuck in the valves.
For such a crucial part that owners can do nothing to maintain, Toyota should admit to using a defective part and extend warranties to 4Runner owners too.
Edit to update: Three days past contact with Toyota and they have not responded directly to me yet.
Edit to update (2): Heard from Toyota and they are refusing to extend warranties on these parts for 4Runners thus far. However if other 4Runner owners encounter the same problem please report them and conditions may change.

I have the same issue that several other 4Runner owners have. I have a 2005 4Runner Limited with the V8. The error is with the emissions system (air pump and air replacement valves) and requires nearly $3000 in parts and labor from the dealer. I have been trying to get help from the corporate office who keeps telling me that the only help would come from a regional manager. The regional manager wanted to know how I got their number. After several "manager level" folks talking about for 2 weeks while my car sat in a garage I am told they will do nothing for me. Nothing at all. I own 3 Toyotas and have helped purchase 2 others for my mother and father in law. Toyota literally doesn't seem to care about enraging a loyal customer. This is not the first major repair I have had to make on this car. Of course everyone was told for years Toyotas run forever without any problems. Yet the 4Runner with the V* cant make it to 100,000 miles...Toyota customer service has been a severe let down to this point. I would be glad to report back if that changes in the future.

Hi, I've been reading a lot on the forum since I bought an 05 4runner a couple of weeks ago but just registered.
Just wanted to share what I found. You may already know but I haven't ran into it this forum yet. I also had p2441, p1442 and p1445 codes when I purchased it and was pretty horrified when I started reading up on it. Luckily I found something the next day, right before ordering parts from the dealer and looking to have someone do the labor for me. An engineer who I believe owns a Tundra or one of the Toyota v8 vehicle made a bypass module and exhaust block off plates related !! I ordered one, installed it and it Worked!! Cleared the codes, been about a week now and all good!!
It was around $155, I just wanted to share as this saved me thousands and could make others here happy too! Here is a link to it.

I ordered one through his ebay... I installed it myself. Pretty straight forward but more like a 2.5-3 hour install for me taking my time with the wiring.
Taking off the front wheels to do the exhaust block plates was the way to go. Maybe tundras have more room to do it without going through the fender wells but on the 4runner it was way easier that way. Hopefully it helps others!

Exact same problem just started on my 2005 4R a few days ago. High pitched (vacuum cleaner like) whine near intake manifold for about 30 secs, then shuts off.
Error code P1441.
Dealer wants $2200-$2500 to replace pump/intake gaskets/air tubes/etc.
Looks like I don't have much choice but to get it repaired or use the AIP bypass kit here:

I'm in the same boat with a similar problem. My issue is a pressure sensor on the air switching valve. From what I can tell, the bypass wont fix this issue, so I will have to engineer my own solution for that.
Why they decided to put an electric pump and valve underneath the intake manifold is beyond me. Even with design mistakes like that, I wouldn't be upset if they actually did something about it like they did with the tundra and sequioa.
After hearing about this and other issues with the 4runner (the cracking/leaky V8 headers, and the driveshaft clunk), I regret buying another Toyota. This is my sixth Toyota, and will likely be my last.

They aren't going to warranty anything parts related. If you have a 4Runner and they were nice enough to fix the problem under warranty, I wouldn't count on them doing it again after you are out of warranty (even with the known issues with the sequoia and tundra). There are people who have been lucky enough to have the dealer cut them a deal or do it under good faith, but that's probably a one in a thousand shot.
Basically, this is one of those systems that should be disabled/bypassed the day your warranty is up (like most other emissions related crap).

It was the previous owner who had the pump replaced along with the three valves. It was done at 143K I think, in 2013. The dealer gave them a 12 month warranty on parts and labor. My dealer tells me that the system was revamped to eliminate water infiltrating the air pump. So, I'm hoping that the truck will be ok. So, there is a way to bypass the pump?

That's good that they offer a warranty on the parts and labor. There is a bypass for the tundra/sequoia/4runner's with the v8, so I don't know if it will work on the 3rd generation.
