Disconnect the battery negative terminal, wait 2 minutes for any capacitors to discharge.

That isn't a good reason, unless it is only for offroad and you trailer it......I've never heard of anyone bashing their shit enough to set an airbag off while offroad.

1 a fuse is easily replaceable
2 I guess you don't really offroad, or you'd understand. You don't have to bash your "shit" as that gets quite messy. I guess you never saw how easily SOME airbags deploy. Ours don't? Who cares and nobody wants to be the first one to orpine it

Hill billies do a lot of things that make me scratch my head....
If anyone has ever set off your airbag while off roading without crashing into something, please post up.

I recently got punched in the face with an airbag...not in my Runner but in a company vehicle.
I have since been thinking heavily about disabling them. I don't like airbags, I think if you're buckled in correctly, there's no need for an airbag and they do more damage than good.
This is my forearm, which came in contact with the bag for a fraction of a second, as it blew my hand off the steering wheel. Yes that is a burn. 2nd degree.
Imagine hitting it with your face and neck.
If you remove the radio, you'll see a small ECU with a harness wrapped in yellow wire loom, this is the SRS ECU. You can unplug this, but the SRS light will come on. Removal of the bulb should be straight forward.

I don't necessary want to "take on all comers" as it were, but you should look into instances of death before and after the mandation of airbags in passenger vehicles.

Air bags are dangerous, and I would not have them connected
As a first responder, I can tell you airbags are dangerous and in more than 60 percent of all accidents they do more harm than good, and the rest there are better more cost effective solutions for your safety.
If you consider the accidents they actually cause, I see not positive benefit of having them.
In spite of what others have said, there all kinds of stories of them deploying accidently and unnecessarily, during on road, off road, and farm use.
Just consider the guy traveling at 70 when a piece of wood flew off a truck and hit the sensor and deployed the airbag, causing him to have an airbagless, and unconscious, secondary wreck, at 70 mph. This occurs more than you can imagine.
Secondary collisions at high speed often occur, but nobody talks about that. A glancing blow, which might have been recovered from, becomes a deadly wreck after the airbags knock the shit out of your brain.
I have been amazed for years at the cognitive dissonance of my peers, they always note when they believe airbags save lives, but never when they kill. One also has to consider that in many cases it is impossible to tell if they were cause, provided any real benefit or did real harm...its like listening to witchcraft to hear a bunch of responders argue about this topic, and I always lose inspite of the evidence.
They are not for me. Standard seat belts are fine, but even they have their drawbacks. If you want real safety, a 4 point safety harness is the way to go, at a 10th of the cost, and the risk, of placing an explosive device in line with your head.
Consider that they were banned when they first came out for various reasons, and ask your self why?
Then follow the money and you will find out the lobby for them spent millions to get them mandated, in spite of the evidence.
For information on how to disable them and eliminate the pesky yellow light, go to FSM SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM - SRS AIRBAG, Section RS. It is a simple matter of disconnecting all the devices, and then you can either figure out what resisters are necessary to fool the air bag sensor assembly into believing the are connected, or remove the yellow light. Most inspection stations will not notice the missing light at ignition, but if they do, you can easily fool it by placing resistance in the line side. RS-4 - 6 show the diagram, and I would imagine with a little research further in the FSM, the resistance can be discerned by any with a little intelligence and knowledge. Sharing the specific information here might violate a 100 federal regs and laws, so I won't.
WARNING: read the FSM before you even think about messing with the explosives the feds mandate in your vehicle or you might get killed during the process. Absolutely make sure you disconnect the neg of the battery, and go have coffee before you begin and reread the section, while the system is straight forward and relatively simple, if you the screw the pooch because your in a hurry, it could hurt you and it will hurt your purse.
